There is a difference in intensity between these two groups. The second is more mouvemente both in dance and music; their succession depends on the construction of the dances, the figures of which take place within this fame work, and are differentiated by accents of drum and cymbals which have an existence independently of the melody. The rhythmical accents of the tjeng-tjengs (cymbals) and in part of the drums are solely related to the dance, not to the melody. Visiting dancers always bring their own tjeng-tjengs and drums. A very good dancer would be able to dance up to a certain point in the style of the gamelan in the village to which he had been invited. But the drummers naturally vary in musicality and in the power of following an unfamiliar dancer. Once when for some hidden reason a Baris dancer suddenly inserted himself into the middle of a Topeng, the drummer and hence the whole gamelan made no effort to follow him. In vain he turned his head and made various signals while dancing, as if soliciting their support. They cheerfully continued in their own lively tempo, though it was very evident that he required a slow music.

Frequently, a tooth-filing ceremony follows, also a custom of initiation for both boys and girls. By having a specialist, usually a Priest, file a small portion of the upper teeth to from a straight line, one diminishes the six evil qualities of human nature: desire, greed, anger, intoxication, irresoluteness, and jealousy. With this ceremony completed, a Balinese looks forward to a life less prone to human frailty and error. Straight teeth make for prettier smiles, too. Ferocious snarls. With long canine's sweiving from the mouth, are reserved for the ghastly grimaces of witches and demons.
MARRIAGE is the final initiation into the community; only a settled married man can become a member of the village association. The Balinese marry at an early age; the average age for a girl is eighteen to twenty and or a boy between twenty and twenty-five

in Bali we must point out a very important distinction which the Balinese make between two clearly separate groups of ancestors. The first of these groups consists of the dead who are riot yet completely purified. This group is in turn subdivided in pirata, those riot yet cremated, and pitara, those already cremated. The former are still completely impure; the latter have been purified, but are still considered as distinct, individual souls. The second group consists of the completely purified ancestors who are considered as divine.
No contact is sought with the pirata, the dead who have not yet been cremated. Oil the contrary they are dangerous, Offerings must however be made for the redemption of their souls.
