The other band members thought this was hilarious and the band had its name. There is a persistent that their name is derived from KKK.. K being the 11th letter in the alphabet. AC/DC - A band member saw it on a vacuum cleaner and correctly figured it had something to do with power. It means "alternating current / direct current". The band didn´t realize it was also slang for bi-sexual, which caused a few akward moments in their early days. A second rumor is "Anti-Christ Devil´s Children".
ACE OF BASE - Their original studio was in the basement of a car repair shop, leading to "base" and they were masters of their own studio, so it was "ace of base".
AEROSMITH - It was evidently a word Joey Kramer wrote all over his notebooks in high school. Some think they were inspired by the 1925 book "Arrowsmith" by Sinclair Lewis.

They went by THE QUARRYMEN and THE SILVER BEETLES awhile later, then shortened and mutated that to THE BEATLES. Lennon and Sutcliffe may have also been influenced by the film "The Wild One", which featured a motorcycle gang called the Beetles. Lennon was also fond of saying he had a vision as a child of a flaming pie in the sky that said "You are Beatles with an "A"...

Other Car topics: Excerpts from Clark's Show: J.D. Power's most and least reliable cars - May 19, 2005 Do you have to spend a fortune to get a reliable car these days? What makes a car reliable after all? Well, J.D. Power & Associates is a research organization that does a well-known automobile survey involving the initial reliability of cars. The annual survey gets more publicity of any other car survey. And for five years, the same company has ranked No. 1. Lexus has been rated the best, most reliable car in the U.S. for five years running, according to the survey. The real shocker is which car maker ranks No. 2 - Jaguar. Clark happens to have two Jaguars, so it makes him somewhat happy about spending so much money on them. The rest of the list includes 3) BMW; 4) Buick; 5) Buick; 6) Mercedes and 7) Toyota. So, who is the worst? The least reliable car in the country is Suzuki. There was a tie for next to last between Mazda and Land Rover. Volkswagen and Porsche were just above those two. So, you don抰 have to have an ultra luxury car to have a reliable one.
Long term interest rates lower than short term rates - February 2, 2005 The Federal Reserve has raised interest rates again, which means that the prime rate is going up and credit card rates will most likely go up. Home equity loans will also go from 4.5 to 5.5. percent, and that rate will slowly increase. At the same time, something strange is happening. Typically when the Feds raise interest rates, other rates go up too. Mortgage rates, for example, typically go up with interest rates go up. But that has not happened this time. Home mortgages have gone down, not up. So, a 30-year fixed rate mortgage will now be about 5.25 percent. A 5-1 ARM will be about 4.75 percent at the most. So it抯 a good idea to 揼o long?as they say. You fix your costs at a lower rate than you can float your costs. So, those with floating rate credit cards should do what they can to pay down their debts. And, if you抮e in an ARM, think about getting out and shifting to a fixed loan.
Buying new versus used cars - October 26, 2004 Clark has long had a bias for used car purchases instead of new car purchases. But he wonders if buying new is sometimes the best idea. New cars can be great deals, especially with all of the sales incentives and financing rates out there. At the same time, used cars that are a year or two old are the best deal they抳e ever been. How can that be, you may be asking. The answer is that all of the sales incentives in the new car market have caused people to ditch old cars that they would have kept longer otherwise. And used cars dealerships have had to drop in price in order to be competitive. So, the first has led to be big effect on the second. It also means that new cars lose a huge percentage of their value in the first year of ownership. New cars lose more than one third of their value in the first 12 months. In the first three years, they lose 60 percent of their value. For this reason, buying used luxury cars is a growing trend. No matter what kind of car you抮e going to buy, always have it inspected by an independent mechanic.
Beware of "flood cars" coming on the market - September 28, 2004 Years ago, Clark got quite a few phone calls from people who had bought used cars that turned out to be 揻lood cars.?It was after a series of hurricanes that totaled cars, which are then bought by salvage companies and the car titles are later washed. People involved in this unsavory business do something known as 搕itle washing,?which basically shows that the car was never salvaged. Well, it抯 about to happen all over again. Over the next several months, we could see hundreds of thousands of flood cars on the market in the aftermath of the four recent hurricanes ?Charley, Ivan, Fran and Jeanne. People in the automotive industry are already bracing themselves for the influx of these cars, according to Edmunds and The Washington Post. Auctioneers are also concerned. One auction owner in Florida said he had already seen 5,000 flood cars. These cars often end up in the hands of 揷urb stoners,?which illegal dealers who run ads in the paper. They pretend that they are selling their sister抯 car or their mother抯 car and they hope you don抰 know what they know. About 20 percent of these cars go to unsuspecting people overseas. The other 80 stay right here in the U.S.A. So, if you are buying a used car, be sure to do a Carfax report from carfax. The auto company, AAA, also does vehicle history reports for members. It抯 imperative that you run one of these reports over the next six months because that抯 when these cars will be out there. And, please spread the word to anyone who is considering buying a used car.
Car dealerships implementing new pricing strategy - September 8, 2004 The three major Detroit automakers ?GM, Ford and Chrysler ?have come up with a new strategy for pricing cars. These companies are pushing through very large price increases on the 2005 models, even though the 2004, 2003 and 2002 models did not sell very well. In fact, these companies are raising the prices of vehicles AND increasing incentives. That is because there is a percentage of car buyers who purchase strictly on emotion. These people do no homework and they get caught up in the thrill of driving a new vehicle. The car market is basically splitting into three categories: people who do no research, people who do some research on the Internet and get a somewhat better price, and finally those people who do lots of homework. The third group treats buying a car like a part time job, but it抯 a very small percentage of the pot. Automakers realize that only about 10 percent of buyers will really work for a good deal. So they can still mark up vehicles and increase their profit margins. Remember that knowledge is power!
Avoid "buy here, pay here" dealerships - July 7, 2004 Did you know that most dealerships will sell you a used car for twice as much as the car is worth? If the car is worth, $5,000, they抮e likely to charge you $10,000. If you finance the car at the dealership on top of that, you could be paying as much as 26 percent each year in interest. Does that sound like a deal to you? Probably not. But almost one in four used cars is now beingsold that way in the United States. Clark was stunned when he read this in the Dallas Morning News. So, we are basically setting ourselves up to be ripped off. These dealerships try to sell you a car on the spot with ads that say, 揘o credit, or bad credit, no problem!?It抯 known as 揃uy here, Pay here,?and the dealerships are making a fortune off of your desire for convenience. There are now 19,000 dealers who sell 揵uy here pay here?cars. If your credit is in a rough spot, you need to buy a car for cash. Have the car checked out by an independent mechanic first to make sure it works. But you will be much better off. You never want to buy a car where everything is taken care of in one place.
J.D. Power's 3-year car reliability survey - June 30, 2004 Cars are the second biggest expense we have in our lives after our homes. You抣l hear Clark talk a lot about Consumer Reports when it comes to buying cars because the car advice they give is invaluable. A lesser-known source is J.D. Power & Associates, which also rates cars but on a smaller scale. J.D. Power has done surveys on initial car quality for years, and the surveys are always very informative. But the company also conducts a second survey that gets much less attention. It rates how well cars do after three years. After three years, things might start breaking on cars and you want to buy one that is reliable past three years. Well, the new data is out and it抯 pretty shocking. The absolute worst car you can buy in terms of reliability and quality is Land Rover. People spend tons of money on these cars, but they抮e definitely not worth it. The next three are Kia, Daewoo and Isuzu. An unlikely candidate, Volkswagen came in fifth. Other cars that got bad scores were Jaguar and Mercedes. So, who is the best? For the tenth consecutive year, Lexus was the most reliable car and no one else came close. Even better news is that second place goes to an American brand ?Buick. It抯 been a while since an American brand was on top. After Buick were Infinity, then Lincoln, Cadillac, Acura, Honda and Toyota.
Protect yourself against dealership mark-ups - June 2, 2004 You抳e probably heard that car dealerships make huge markups on cars. Usually, they mark-up the financing anywhere from 3 percent to 12 percent. They claim it really took a lot of work to get you that rate when really it was a cinch. This secret is not as well kept as it used to be, so people are going to credit unions more often. Most people just know better nowadays. But for those who don抰, one dealership outside of L.A. posts a daily list of credit scores and the rate those scores will get you. They抮e trying to be more upfront with customers who may question the honesty of the rates, and it抯 working out for everyone. The dealership is able to get people in and out in less time, thereby earning them more customers. And customers get an honest deal. But most dealerships aren抰 that above board. So, you have to do the work yourself. First go to eloan and get your score. You can get it for free once. Then go to myfico and find out what rate you should be offered. Then, you抮e armed with knowledge and can get the rate you deserve.
Americans keeping cars longer - March 31, 2004 Clark is a big fan of keeping cars until the wheels fall off. So, he was quite excited when he saw some encouraging statistics in USA Today about how long people are keeping their cars. The report stated that a generation ago, the average car on the road was four years old. Today, the average car is eight years old. This is happening for several reasons. First of all, the typical car is made phenomenally better. That is because the industry has a lot more watch dogs, including the Center or Auto Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It means that people are in a position to keep cars for twice as long. Clark would like you to keep a car 10 or more years. If you do, you will be able to retire five years earlier. Think about how great that would be. You might not have the fancy car that the person next to you does. But that person will be working while you抮e sunning yourself on the beach. If you don抰 like the idea of keeping a car for 10 years, consider buying a fancy car that is a couple years old and then dump it after a few. The biggest loss in value occurs on a car in the first 24 months. So, it抯 worth it to go a little older.
The truth about returning used cars - March 30, 2004 Many people think that they can return a used car after they buy it. But that is a misconception. When people sell you something door-to-door, you have a three-day right to cancel. But with cars, the minute you sign your name it抯 a done deal. There are some forward thinking car dealerships that have different policies. But, in general, people in the used car business will lie and cheat to sell you a car. It may be a hunk of junk. And you have no recourse. In California, the legislature isdoing something about this. The state is considering a 揢sed Car Bill of Rights?that would give customers three days to return the car. And, under the new law, the words 揷ertified used car?would actually mean something. Right now, any dealership can say a car is 揷ertified,?but it doesn抰 mean anything. Legitimate certified programs are underwritten by a manufacturer, the best being Jaguar抯 program. The manufacturer actually provides the buyer with an enhanced warranty just for buying the car. We抳e also had several discussions in the air about resales and the 揺xtras?for which dealerships car you. Under the law, any time a dealership sells you something with 揺xtras,?the company will have to tell you exactly what the mark-up is. Typically, when you buy a used car it抯 揳s is?with no warranty. So, you should always have the car checked out by a certified mechanic before you buy.
Carfax reports and buying used cars - March 18, 2004 If you抳e bought a used car recently, you may have taken Clark抯 advice and bought a Carfax report. These are background checks on cars that you buy online at carfax. It抯 basically a title history report, and you get a 30-day pass to run VIN numbers on cars you抮e interested in buying. The report tells you if the car has been totaled in an accident and rebuilt, or 搒alvage titled.?If the car is in the state抯 lemon law buy back program, or has received flood damage, hail damage and fire damage, that information is also included. And, there are businesses that buy these 搒alvage title?b> cars and sell them to the public as a salvaged car. Most of these businesses are legitimate. But others are not. They will go to states that don抰 have good vehicle registration laws and they re-register the car with a clean title. They then sell it to people as if it is new. It抯 a process known as 搕itle washing.?In addition, CarFax has a new policy stating that it will buyback a car in the first year if company representatives fail to pick up on any key problems that have happened with cars. It抯 a new layer of protection from CarFax, which is great. But it抯 not enough. When you buy a used car, you need a checklist of things to do, right? Your first step is to check the April issue of Consumer Reports 揢sed Car Buying Guide.?This guide tells you which cars you should avoid and which ones are the . You can then go to the comparison sites, kbb, Edmunds and nada. In general, Clark likes you to run Carfax reports, so do that next. If you抮e a AAA member, you get a discount on Carfax. The next step is to consider 搈anufacturer-certified?b> used cars. Finally, when you抮e interested in a car, have it inspected by an ASE-certified mechanic. These steps won抰 eliminate 100% of your problems, but they will help you get a much better buy.
How reliable is your car after one, three and five years? - March 8, 2004 If you抮e interested in buying a new or used car, Clark always recommends the April issue of Consumer Reports. The entire issue is devoted to car buying and CR does a very thorough job inspecting what cars are the most reliable and which are the least reliable. In addition, there is no influence from the automakers. The issue is starting to appear on shelves now, and new this year are charts showing which cars are most reliable after one, three and five years of ownership. This is great for people who like to keep cars for a long time. Although brands sometimes jump around, in general the cars that are most reliable after one year are usually the most reliable after five. The most reliable of all brands is a tie between Infiniti and Lexus. Rounding out the top six are Honda, Toyota, Acura and Mazda. One car that has been plagued with bad publicity lately is Mercedes, one of the most expensive cars on the road. In the April issue, Mercedes comes in well below average after a year, second from the worst after three years and way below average after five years. How did BMW do? It looks ugly after a year, moves to better than average after three years and moves to just behind the leaders after five years. So, there are some initial quality issues, but they are reliable and durable over time.
Beware when buying used cars! - February 9, 2004 Clark was driving on the freeway this weekend when he saw a pick-up truck with smoke blowing out of the exhaust pipe. All of a sudden, the truck抯 engine exploded and debris went flying everywhere. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but the car ?which had an 揂S IS?dealership sticker on it - basically died there on the freeway. The driver must have recently bought the used vehicle, and all Clark could think was that the man was stuck with it now. He has no transportation, yet he still probably owes money for the truck. Clark gets calls about the sale of used vehicles all the time, because people don抰 know the sale is final. The federal government requires only that used cars have a sticker in the window, saying either 揂S IS ?no warranty?or 搘arranty included.?If you buy a car 揂S IS,?you can抰 return it under any circumstances. Do not rely on anything the salesman tells you during the sale because all that matters is what is in writing. So, if you抮e thinking of buying a used car, make sure you have the car checked out by a mechanic who is ASE certified. You can see more of Clark抯 suggestions if you go to Clark抯 Library and click on 揃uying New,?or 揃uying Used.?br> What do "certified" car programs really - February 3, 2004 How do you protect yourself buying a used car these days? Clark was looking in the auto ads this weekend and he saw ad after ad for 揷ertified used cars.?What does that mean? Well, for many it has come to mean that the car has been checked out thoroughly, it hasn抰 been in a wreck and it is okay to buy. When visiting car buying sites, you will often see a price for a regular used car and a price for a 揷ertified used car.?There are legitimate certified programs, for sure. But don抰 think that a dealership certification means it抯 been checked out. Even if the dealership has a special label or sticker that they put on cars, it doesn抰 means there is a warranty or guarantee. Legitimate certified car programs come from the manufacturer and come with some typed of extra warranty or guarantee. The program got its start from Jaguar, which has had a large number of leased vehicles. The company was having problems with the resale value of these leased vehicles, so the company wanted to ensure the cars were in the best shape possible. The length and comprehensive nature of the warranty are still the best of any program out there. So, the luxury brands still continue to lease vehicles, but they don抰 take a huge hit the cars comes back. In one where both parties have an interest in keeping the car in great shape, the vehicle will go through a certification process. It will include the following: ?Anything wrong with the car will be fixed. ?The company won抰 sell you a car that has been wrecked. ?It will come with a warranty. ?The best programs will even offer a 搕hink about it?period of a few days so you can return the car no questions asked. ?It will cost you more money. So, if buying used makes you nervous, one of these legitimate certified programs may ease your mind. Remember that these programs are not a substitute for having the vehicle checked out by an independent diagnostic mechanic. There is no substitution for that. So, you probably want to get the car checked out by an ASE certified mechanic just in case. According to J.D. Power, the sale of 揷ertified?b> used cars is up 50 percent in the past few years. But you want real certified programs that come from the manufacturer and that come with a warranty. If it doesn抰 have those two things, 揷ertified?is just a word.
Consumer Reports awes automakers - September 16, 2003 Clark often refers to Consumer Reports magazine for its recommendations and warnings about products. One of the biggest products Consumer Reports rates is cars. But Clark had no idea how popular they are. About 40 percent of car buyers review Consumer Reports before they make a car buying decision, and 60 percent of van buyers use the magazine. Talk about market power! The magazine started in the ?0s and has never accepted advertising. It抯 always used a strict business model that is based solely on covering its costs for research and printing. There is no other business model like it with such a low subscription cost. And, according to USA Today, automakers are just as awed by the magazine抯 power that they are sending pre-production vehicles to the magazine for review. The automakers are asking CR what changes they should make and then they抮e actually making them before they go on the market. Clark thinks this is great because it means fewer poorly made cars on the market. So, what happens when a car shows up after it抯 been re-produced? Is CR likely to be a little more lenient because they where involved in the design? Who knows? It抯 still worthwhile to stick to Consumer Reports?list when buying your next car.
CarMax stands out above the rest - September 12, 2003 Clark recently saw a delightful story about CarMax, a 10-year-old company that sells mostly used cars with a very-low hassle sales method. There are 43 locations in the United States right now and that number is expected to double. When the company first started, it was owned by Circuit City and so it took CarMax a while to figure out how to sell cars. What has worked for CarMax is the fact that the price of the car is not subject to negotiation and the potential customer can take it home for five days to test it out. There are limitations to how many miles you can drive it. But if you don抰 like it, you can bring it back and get a full refund. But you need to be sure you have the car checked out by an independent mechanic during that time. The cars are not all in top-top shape and it抯 up to you to get it checked out. CarMax also sells such a large volume of cars that they抳e overshadowed the dealerships and forced them to adapt to marketplace demands. Granted, CarMax doesn抰 always offer the best price. But people flock there because they like the car-buying process and they feel comfortable going there. Funny how you treat people well and they will beat a path to your door.
Savings on cars up to $5,600 - August 21, 2003 Clark saw some stats in the Detroit News, the paper that follows the car market better than any other. It said that the average consumer is saving an average of $5,609 on car purchases these days. That抯 a discount of more than 20 percent and it抯 unheard of. So, what are we doing with that $5,600 savings? We抮e buying more car. The average price of a new car is up about 10 percent over the past 11 months. People are spending an average of $23,200 because of 搖pgrade mania.?They抮e getting more horsepower, fancier radios and anything they can improve. We抮e in a position today to bargain, especially on 2003 models. The greatest sweet spot in the market is for high-end vehicle buyers who are willing to have this year抯 body style instead of the one that抯 just around the corner. So, if it抯 not that important to you or you like the current body style, you抣l really be able to steal a deal!
Set prices for used cars a hit with consumers - June 10, 2003 Buying a used car over a new one is always a way to get a great deal but when people buy a used car where do they usually go? To car dealers. And one chain in particular, CarMax, with its no-haggle, no-hassle set prices, is one of the most successful. It is one of a handful of operators, inspired by the way Saturn sold new cars, that set out eight or 10 years ago to change how people buy used cars. Why? Because people hate 搕he grind?of bargaining with sales reps in car dealerships. CarMax is the lone survivor of all those operators with sales and profits booming and newstores opening up everywhere. Clark congratulates them in their success but a question he gets asked all the time concerning CarMax is should the car still be checked out by an independent mechanic? Yes it should he says, even though they come with a short warranty. CarMax offer a right to return in a certain number of days or miles and in that time you should get it checked out by an ASE certified mechanic. He says even if you buy from a traditional dealer you should only do so on the basis that is does pass inspection by your own mechanic. Also, remember that there are two kinds of certified used car programs. The first is from the manufacturer with a warranty and the second is from the dealer and means absolutely nothing!
Extended warranties on cars - May 7, 2003 Clark has always said that extended warranties are something you should never buy on appliances, electronics and computers. He抯 also said that used home warranties are a great thing to have if you抮e selling a home. But you shouldn抰 buy one if you抮e buying a home. The other item people ask about is cars. Should you buy an extended warranty on a car? Clark is neutral on this because an extended car warranty is not that expensive ($1,000 on average). And the cost of repairs on a car can be very costly. But Smart Money magazine wrote a story about why you should not buy one. Smart Money says that the money you would spend on a warranty is much better off in your pocket. People are going to buy these warranties, though. And, if you do, the magazine recommends that you do three things: 1) Wait until the original warranty expires; 2) Stay with another manufacturer抯 warranty; 3) Negotiate the price of the warranty. The dealer will tell you it抯 a set price, but it抯 not true. There is a huge mark-up on car warranties and you can work it to your advantage.
Great deals in the luxury used car market - April 25, 2003 Clark is a huge advocate of buying used cars. The longer you have acar, the less it抯 worth. And the first two years of a car抯 life is when you get clobbered on the value of the vehicle. That抯 why you always hear Clark suggest that you buy used. And now, the Wall Street Journal has found that there are some great discounts in the used luxury vehicle market. One reason people buy luxury vehicles is the prestige of the name. In reverse, the second buyer won抰 put as big of a premium on it and won抰 pay as much. So, luxury cars have a much greater drop in value in the first two or three years than a traditional vehicle. But now it抯 even more severe. The demand for luxury cars just isn抰 there because people just don抰 feel as wealthy. Add on top of that all of the special rebates and deals and the market is undermined even more. A Saab 95 is down 23 percent over the past year, for example. A 2000 Jaguar XKR is down 19 percent in the past year. The typical drop is 17 percent. Even the regular used car market has seen a 14 percent drop in luxury cars. At auctions, the average luxury car is selling for about $15,000, according to Manheim Auctions. That抯 the lowest drop in memory. So, you have tremendous pricing power if you think used instead of new.
SUV, minivans are great deals - February 13, 2003 With the run up in the price of gasoline and the anti-SUV sentiment out there, sport utility vehicles are not so hot right now. The Wall Street Journal did some research and found that discounts in SUVs are up to $8,000. The smallest discount is about $3,000, but the average is about $6,000. And, manufacturers are cutting prices through cheap financing, rebates and factory-to-dealership alternative. This is a true example of the need to zig when everyone else zags. It抯 a great time to look for SUVs because they are not 搃n?right now. And, when new car prices are depressed, used car prices are extremely depressed. The vehicles hurting the most are SUVs that are more like trucks. For example, the Nissan Xterra, Eddie Bauer FordExplorer, Dodge Durango, GMC Envoy and Toyota Highlander are all great bargains right now. For a while, mini-vans were the thing to buy until they quickly became uncool. Now, minivans are equipped with tons of great safety and convenience features, and the prices are great, too.
Shopping across the country for your car - February 10, 2003 Clark read a story in the Dallas Morning News about how car dealers are able to use the Internet to figure out where used car prices are strongest or weakest in the market. There are significant differences from one area of the country to another when it comes to car and truck prices. One dealer was picking up tons of used pick-up trucks in Dallas and selling them for a higher price in Chicago. The cost to tow the trucks was small in comparison to what the dealership made on the price gap. When you think of supply and demand with an SUV or passenger car, you figure it抯 the same everywhere. But that抯 no longer true. When you go to a car shopping and comparison sites, you will see a huge difference in price depending on what zip code you enter. So, now, it抯 possible for you to visit someone in another state, buy a car and have the trip paid for in the money you saved on the car, plus a little extra. Clark talked about this a year ago in reference to new cars. Now the same price variation has trickled into the used car market. Think about how many weeks you have to work to get $1,000 after taxes. You have to work a lot of hours. So, it抯 worth it to shop regionally for a car.
Great time to buy a car - again! - December 4, 2002 As you already know, the auto industry is having a terrible time getting people to buy cars. And automakers are basically desperate to sell you a car. In addition, there are specialized market forces that will make used cars a better bargain than ever. Here抯 the deal: An automaker likes to have a 60-day supply of cars. So, if they stop making cars now, it would take 60 days to sell everything they have. GM right now has 25 percent more cars available on their lots than they should. Chrysler has about 50 percent more cars. And Ford has even more on their lots. So, for car buyers, something has switched. Earlier this year, when the incentives first came out for cars, people moved up their decision to buy a car and the dealerships didn抰 really have to bargain too much with them. Now, the 揻uture demand?has dwindled, meaning there aren抰 a lot of people out there who want to buy a new car ?even with the zero percent financing incentives. So, if you go to buy a car now, you will get a big discount from the dealer as well as all of the incentives they were already offering. The down side to this is that used cars have very little value. So when you take your car to trade-in, you will get less than you think. Other automakers are not suffering like the big three, which account for about half of all car sales. So, you won抰 get the bargains with the littleguys that you would with the big names.

Canadian car update - October 29, 2002 Clark has talked in the past about buying cars in Canada. It抯 true that there is tremendous potential to save thousands of dollars by purchasing a car in Canada versus the United States. We, as Americans, have the right to buy a car in Canada because of NAFTA, and our the value of our dollar is huge there. A couple problems may come with the purchase, however. The Canadian cars have kilometric odometers, and these need to be changed out when you cross the border. This is where the crooks come in. When the odometer head is switched out, crooks roll back the miles so they can sell them for a lot more money. Cars are worth a lot more when they have low mileage. One of these rings was just busted when a guy, who bought a Canadian car, took his car to a mechanic because it was acting up. The mechanic said the car should not be having problems with such low mileage. So, the man did a Carfax search and discovered the real mileage. So, if you plan to buy a car in Canada be careful. Have the car inspected by an independent mechanic regardless of where you buy it. In addition, Honda is also trying to discourage people from buying its cars in Canada. Honda Odyssey ?a hot seller in Canada ?costs about $4,000 less over the border. So, Honda is not honoring warranties on Canadian bought cars. Consider buying a car in the States first. Used car prices are still very low.
Used car values drop; deals get better - October 15, 2002 Clark has been so psyched about the special offers available on used cars over the past few months, and the news just keeps getting better. According to a chart in the Wall Street Journal, the value of used cars has seriously diminished. A new Dodge Caravan costs $28,000. A two-year-old vehicle is now worth $12,000. The Mazda Millenia costs $31,000 brand new. A two-year-old Millenia was worth $13,000. Granted, this is trade-in value, not retail. But the point is that the values of used cars has been demolished. With this massive oversupply, you as a buyer have a special opportunity to get a great deal on used cars. The opportunities came about for several reasons. First of all, a huge number of leased vehicles were turned back this year and last year because dealers sold so many leases in the early 90s. Secondly, manufacturers offered zero percent financing on tons of new vehicles, persuading people to trade in their used car and buy a brand new one. Remember to check the sites kbb and Edmunds for comparable values. In addition, lenders are willing to make very favorable loans to you on 搉ewer?b> used cars right now. Why? The value has already been sucked out in the first few years. But always remember that if you decide to buy used, remember to have the vehicle inspected before you buy.
Odometer fraud a big business - July 12, 2002 People are using technology they抳e bought over the Internet to dial back odometers on cars you might be interested in buying. People in the car business apparently buy the cars at auctions and then hook up software to roll back the digital odometer. The whole idea of digital odometers was to replace the old wind up odometers that were so easy to roll back. But now, the hackers have come up with a way to beat the digital system, too. As a result, people are overpaying as much as $2,500 for used cars. Clark talks all the time about what a great deal used cars are these days, so it can be pretty confusing. What should you do? Your homework. There are no guarantees in life. But when buying a used car be sure to have an ASE certified mechanic checkout the car and pull a title history report at carfax. You can catch odometer fraud by looking at the chain of transactions, where readings will usually appear. Over a billion dollars a year is lost to odometer fraud, so it抯 a big business. Be careful!
Buying used car smarter than ever - June 28, 2002 It抯 a great year to buy a used car. Why? There are two key factors that have put auto dealers and manufacturers into a bind. The first is that dealers have been doing all kinds of incentives for you and it has essentially lowered the price of all new cars. Secondly, automakers were not very smart in how they leased cars a few years ago. Now, their dealer lots are literally being taken over by endless supplies of leases that are just a few years old. In addition, GM is leading a movement to sell you certified used cars. This means the sale will not be 揳s is?like usual. The car willcome with a two- or three- year warranty and will have been inspected. The idea is that the company is checking the cars and actually reconditioning the car before it is sold. You will pay a little more, but you now have some assurance that the car is going to be okay. This doesn抰 mean you don抰 have to do your homework anymore. Check prices on the car comparison sites and have the car inspected by an independent diagnostic mechanic.
Wal-Mart selling cars? - April 23, 2002 Buying a used car can be scary, especially because we normally don抰 trust the salespeople and because there is no return policy with used cars. Now, there are some new players in the game, who have introduced a new sales model. CarMax is the one most of us know about now, and Saturn before them. They give you a no-haggle price and a grace period to test the car and return it if you change your mind. The nation抯 biggest retailer, Wal-Mart, is now entering the game. Wal-Mart is opening used car lots at five of their stores in Houston called 揚rice One.?They will offer a return policy, and you抣l have 5-day money back guarantee. You抣l also have a month to bring it back and cars will come with a warranty. Still, you should have the vehicle checked out. Also, check your vehicles?title history either on carfax or aaa. Use an ASE certified mechanic, as well.
So why should you buy used cars? About 4.1 million vehicles that were leased in 1999 will be returning to lots this year as used cars. Think about the value you can get on these cars. If you do a good job checking out the vehicle you will do much better on the purchase price.
Used car sale steals - January 10, 2002 Say auto makers sell an average of 1.3 million vehicles in a month. About half of them are trade-ins that will be sold again as "pre-owned" vehicles. The amount of available used cars was even higher during October, November and December. What does that mean to you? The overstock has caused dealerships to lower the cost of cars about 10 percent. That may not sound like much, but it does make a difference. And, prices are down significantly for models that are two and three years old. You may find even better deals on the street, and the warranties are still good on many of them. There are enormous buying opportunities for used vehicles right now. Don't miss out!
Car buying collapse - December 13, 2001 The car buying boom is over. After sales of new and used cars shot up 24 percent in October, this month they have plummeted. What happened? Back then, people who were considering buying down the road jumped into the market place and bought because there were great opportunities, including zero percent financing. The deals are still out there, but there aren't as many people buying. So, this may be the best time ever to buy a car. The financing is still great and the models are there ?more than before.
Low repair vehicles - November 19, 2001 Arecent J.D. Power & Associates survey reports on the best vehicles to own. It is based on cars that are four years old and their average number repairs per year. The top five vehicles were: Lexus, Infinity, Jaguar, Lincoln and Acura. Other non-luxury vehicles that did well were Honda, Toyota and Buick. So how can you cash in on this information without paying full retail? How about buying them used? A good source of used vehicles are companies that have leased them. After three years or so they replace the leased vehicles with new ones and the used cars are up for grabs at a discount. Another good tidbit of news is that used vehicles are in oversupply by 25% over the last four months. That means you have more to choose from. To go to the J.D.Power & Associates site, click here.
Used car buying - October 23, 2001 Car dealers called the surge of October sales "unsustainable." With so many taking advantage of zero interest loans and other incentives it leaves few consumers buying used cars. The USA Today surveyed used car dealers who report that the oversupply is three times as high as it should be at this time of year. The used car market is flooded due to trade-in models and to rental car agencies reducing fleets and returning one-year models. There is a tendency for professional and amateur sellers to hold prices level during periods of oversupply. But as the surplus grow - prices should soon fall. look for excellent opportunities on used vehicles before the year end. before you start your shopping, follow clark's tips on used car buying.
wheel deals - august 28, 2001 there are tremendous deals available in the car market. if you need new wheels, clark encourages you to consider the purchase of a two to three-year old model for the most significant savings. a new york times reporter found important data from the national automobile dealer association that indicates the values of 1998-'99 auto models have seen huge drops in just the last year. one 1998 model, expected to be valued at $19,000 at the end of a lease plan, was valued today at $15,000. many other models have lost 20% in value over the last 12 months. what models have seen the biggest drops in value? the honda accord; toyota camry and the ford taurus. also devalued is the ford f150 pick-up; ford explorer; ford ranger; chrysler grand caravan and jeep grand cherokee. ready to go shopping? clark reminds us to eliminate the risk of purchasing trouble by taking the used car buy process step-by-step. what should you do first? ?get pre-qualified with your credit union or bank in advance. you'll know before you head out shopping just what you can afford. rates on used cars are favorable from either institution. ?have the vehicle you would like to buy inspected by an independent ase-certified mechanic. this step will cost you from $80 to $100, but he or she can discover surprises that may not seem apparent to you or the car seller. don't rely on the warranty plans. get it thoroughly checked out. ?run a title history of the vehicle at carfax. reports, requiring the vehicle vin number, costs $20. ------------ chrysler plans to jump back into the minivan market in a big way this year after losing marketshare to popular foreign models - the honda odyssey and toyota sienna. the car maker plans to introduce new fully-equipped van designs starting at $16,995. when new car sales are heavily discounted, the values of used vehicles drops even more. you may re-consider a new vehicle purchase for a great deal on a slightly used model.
used cars - march 27, 2001 regardless of what a used car salesperson tells you, that used car purchase you make is "as is". that means that even if the dealer said the car is in sound condition and the transmission clunks out just a mile down the road - you own it without recourse for a refund. but the used car buying experience at carmax could change that. the company, currently in 8 cities, plans to expand to 35 cities. used cars sold by carmax will come with a one-month warranty and a 5-day return plan (mileage limitations). sales of saturn used cars come with a 3-day money-back guarantee, or a 30-day return for trade-in plan. all used cars with a certified and inspected sticker provide for a one-month warranty. no matter what type of warranty you receive on your used car purchase, spend the extra money to have the vehicle inspected by an independent ase-certified mechanic. also, pay the $20 to run a title, salvage and odometer check with carfax. review new and used car values before making a purchase at these web sites:
