Battle of Trafalgar
21 October 1805
Anyone who takes to the high waters knows that checking
what the weather conditions will be can mean the difference
between a successful or disastrous voyage. Two hundred
years ago that is exactly what Admiral Lord Nelson did
before going into battle with the Combined Fleets of France
and Spain.

History
of the Beaufort scale
It's often said that Francis Beaufort, of the British Royal
Navy, was the first to devise a scale of wind force, towards
the start of the 19th century. You might be surprised to learn
that he was not, in fact, the originator of such a scale.
A similar one was actually in use at least a century earlier
- and probably long before that.
