How to submit a balance in dispute

A balance dispute is any payment, other than regular installments made in the ordinary course, pertaining to a disputed sum or balance that is presented to Sallie Mae as settlement of a loan obligation, whether in full or in part, or marked with the phrase "Payment in Full" or other similar language.

Disputed payments should be accompanied with a detailed account of the alleged dispute and should state the action or relief requested. Sallie Mae reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to return or refund any payment tendered if the payment is noted to pay the account in full and the payment does not equal the amount owed to satisfy your loan debt in full. Such payment, at the sole option of Sallie Mae, may be returned or refunded in a form of a corporate check and the requested relief thereby denied. Receipt of any payment by Sallie Mae does not constitute a waiver of any rights Sallie Mae may have and may be returned without prejudice.

Lender Relations call in tips

Our Lender Relations department assists our lender customers. You will be greeted by an automated voice response system and asked to identify yourself as a lender (press 2) and to enter your six-digit Department of Education lender code. This routes you to the Lender Relations Service Coordinator with the most knowledge of your institution and relationship with Sallie Mae, whether from a guarantee, disbursement, servicing, or loan sale perspective.

Sallie Mae call in tip

You have the option of using the Sallie Mae Interactive Voice Response Unit 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It is a menu-driven telephone response system that can give you some specific answers to questions about payments, payoffs, account status, offer forms, etc. This is where you will start when you call the toll-free number. During hours of operation, one of your choices will be to talk with a representative.

Tips for international communication

Email: Be sure that your name, address, and phone number accompany all electronic correspondence and that your email address is listed. Do not include your Social Security number. Information transmitted by email is not secure and could be read by a third party while in transit. Information of a sensitive nature should be sent by posted mail.

Posted mail: Whenever possible, please use the address shown on correspondence you receive from the Sallie Mae Servicing Corporation. Refer to Corporate addresses for correct mailing addresses.

Means of payment: Sallie Mae accepts payment only in U.S. dollars, drawn on a U.S. bank, and clearable through the U.S. banking system, as indicated on the check by a nine-digit routing and transit number.

In addition to paying by check, borrowers may use by wire transfer, money order, or cashier's check as long as all payments are payable in U.S. dollars. To initiate these transactions, borrowers should contact their banks.

To get instructions for these services or (if wiring funds) to get Sallie Mae's bank account number and ABA routing number, please call Sallie Mae at the phone number listed at the top of this page.
