would be suited for that category. Birmingham Airport was opened at Elmdon, Birmingham on 8th July 1939. Owned and operated by Birmingham City Council as a municipal airport, it was designed to meet the needs of the residents and the industry of the city and its immediate surroundings. During 2001 the Airport handled 7.8 million passengers compared to 7.6 million passengers in 2000. Since the tragic events of 11th September, last year, passenger numbers for the last three months of the year 2001 did decrease, however, the Airport's scheduled route network and charter programme remains largely intact since the US terrorist attacks. The Airport Company is prepared to meet both the short and longer term challenges that face us and as a result our aim is to continue to provide the region with a strong route network.
