USA branch FAQ   Pages: 1 2 Last

This branch covers mainland USA as well as Hawaii and Alaska. There's a fair amount of information about these areas in the WorldGuide part of the main LP site, and you can also find some traveller information in the Postcards section.

LP also have an accomodation booking service which can be found here.

Inside this thread you should find all sorts of useful information, from suggested itineraries to airline information, take a look for yourselves!

Skiing near Washington DC

Hi all

I will be in Washington DC in mid-December for a conference but have 3-4 spare days . . . I would like to go skiing if there is somewhere nearby and the season has started etc. I live in Australia, thus have no "local knowledge"

So, can anyone tell me:
Are there any ski reorts nearby? (I am bascially a green-run skier)
When does the ski season start?
How would you go about organisng it (transport, accomodation etc.)

Any info. appreciated!

Thanks
Josh from Australia

Upstate New York

I have three weeks available in New York and am thinking of dividing my time between NY city and hiring a car and seeing some of NY state. I assume hiring a car in the city will be more expensive than taking a train out and hiring elsewhere. I'm wondering what the accommodation situation will be around the end November, beginning December. Am I likely to find inexpensive motel accommodation readily available?

I haven't spent a lot of time looking yet and am about to start planning but if anyone has any experience of driving in NY and Vermont then I'd appreciate any suggestions for places to head for whilst I'm there. I wonder if I should try to drive to Niagara or perhaps to Boston instead?

As you can see, I'm still flexible (vague?) about what I want to do, hence, any suggestions gratefully received.

USA Road Trip

Hi

We are coming to the end of 3 month road trip across North America and will finish in Los Angeles. We bought a Chevy Astro (now called Ruby) when we started in New York from some British guys who were just finishing a 5 week road trip.
We would like to sell it on to someone doing a road trip that will get the benefit of little extras, lots of maps and our endless advise on do's and don'ts (thats if they're interested, we did quite enjoy finding out for ourselves even if you do come unstuck occasionally!!)

Any help/advice appreciated on where we could advertise/list her etc! Really looking to find her a good home!

We are off to Fiji on the 19th November, any help/advise on good budget places to stay at this time of year!

Thanks...

SBC Park, SF

My husband and I are going to the Rolling Stones concert there on November 13th. I am wondering how cold it will be for this evening concert. I thought with all those bodies there it would be reasonable to just wear something like a turtleneck sweater and light jacket but some people are saying that it could be really cold and to maybe bring a blanket....... I'm not planning on sitting much so don't think I'll take one unless you LPs say otherwise! Anyone been there in November???
We're from Victoria, BC and I really think the weather is comparable in the winter but perhaps I'm wrong.
I have read to bring warm outer clothing for our trip to Alcatraz. We are getting very excited as neither of us has been to San Francisco or a live performance of Stones.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Australia-Washington DC-SanFran... on the move

I recently (4 months ago) moved back to America after spending three years in Melbourne, oz. I moved Charlottesville, Virginia, and am absolutely suffocating from the sterility of this area. I believe it to be culture shock, and I in no way blame the people that surround me for my discomfort, however I cannot help shake the feeling that there is something dreadfully erraneous in the manner that people conduct themselves here.
This "stand-offish" or paranoid nature is sowly getting to me. After spending my last years in oz where everyone is soooo lovely, I find it to be very odd that the mentality in this area is so defensive and self-destructive. So, I have decided to move to San Francisco.
Well, rather, I am contemplating it. And I need help.
Information of every kind would be great. My maiin fear is money. I am a poor student, and am quite willing to work hard to support myself over there, but I wonder... is life really that expensive in s.f.?
I would be looking at attending a community college....
I would love to know about the people... the mentality... the social scene...
Please dont be afraid to bombard me with ... more inside

cali-LV-GC itinerary

Hey guys, i think i have finalized my plans for our trip and would like to get some feedback on the itinerary. Is this plan feasable. Ifsomeone can reccomend any places to stay on our route it would be appreciated, or any suggestions at all.

Nov. 01- arrive in LA (1000 am), pick-up rental car and head up RTE 1 to Hearst Castle (spend the night somewhere) any suggestions?
Nov. 02- Drive through Big Sur to Monterrey(aquarium, 17mile drive, Pacific Grove drive), spend night in Monterrey
Nov. 03- Go to Santa Cruz(see boardwalk, have lunch), continue to SF. (spend night)
Nov. 04- See Alcatraz, crooked street and walk around downtown. (spend night)
Nov. 05- Spend day in SF, leave in evening for Yosemite. (spend night close to park) suggestions please that are close to park so we can get a full day in the park.
Nov. 06- Spend all day at Yosemite NP, then leave in evening towards Death Valley NP. We will take RTE 395 as it was suggested to be more scenic (how long will this take?). Will stop somewhere for the night (suggestions) enroute depending on how far we can go.
Nov. 07- Go through Death Valley NP enroute to Las Vegas ... more inside

layover in NYC

Hello, I have a 7 hour layover in NYC in three weeks and would like to see the Statue of Liberty and possibly Ground Zero. Is this practical and what would be the best and or cheapest way to get there from JFK. What would a cab cost? Thanks.

ID in SF   Pages: 1 2

A friend and I are leaving for San Francisco in about a week's time. We're really looking forward to trying out the restaurants and mooching around a few bars.

We're both 35, but guide books seem to recommend that we carry ID with us when we go out so we can order alcohol. Is this really necessary? I'd say we both look our age (!). Thing is, I don't have a driving licence and I'm reluctant to carry my passport around if we're going to bars and clubs. What would locals recommend?

Many thanks.

Florida - need ideas for 65th birthday celebration adventure

I am going to Florida in Feb or March of next year and looking for an interesting way to celebrate my father's 65th birthday down there. There will be 6 adults and 3 kids (ages 5 and under) and we're looking to do something fun... just not sure what exactly! Could be renting canoes somewhere, renting a sailboat for a day, a mini-bike trip, any cool hikes or overnight adventures that might be good... We'll be staying in Naples area. Any suggestions?

Detroit Nightlife

Good afternoon!
I will be spending two days in downtown Detroit on Nov. 12-13. I was wondering if anyone could recommend a fun club or lounge that plays mod/brit pop, indie rock, alternative music. Preferably, though not necessarily, with a dance floor.
After browsing various listings, I stumbled across The Belmont Bar and Mephisto's. Both are in the Hamtramck area. Has anyone been there? Feedback?

Cheers,
M

Houston?   Pages: 1 2

Has anyone been on a stop-over in Houston? Is it attractive to stay there for several days? I would prefer to spend time outside the city. What is there to see and do and do I get there without renting a car?

Thanks a lot, Ute

San Simeon - we loved it!

Just wanted to let any of you, who are planning a trip to California, know about this wonderful town!

We were planning to use it as a stopover, but stayed for a few days. It was so relaxing after being in Hawaii, Anaheim and LA for a few weeks.

It was a simple, yet beautiful place.

We were tired of the crowds so grabbed our LP guide, thumbed through it, and found this town with an incredibly small population. It sounded 'perfect' so we decided to check it out.

We were there in December. It was cold, but romantic. We toasted marshmallows on the beach, with hardly anybody else around. The outdoor fireplaces were topped up for us each night...it was magic!
