The main train station in Rome, "Termini",
is the ideal area to stay for anyone who wants the comfort of
being near the air terminal, the metro and the bus terminal
- all within walking distance of the main tourist attractions
in Rome.
The Termini Station area is built on
the Esquiline Hill, also famous for St. Mary Major Basilica
- a wonderful blend of Roman and Gothic architecture. Its ornate
ceiling is decorated with the first gold brought from the New
World and donated by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain
- it is a perfect example of a Roman Basilica and should not
be missed! Ancient Rome was built on the east, or left bank
of the Tiber, on elevations (now much less prominent) emerging
from the marshy lowlands of the Campagna. The Seven Hills of
the Ancient City are the Palatino, roughly in the centre, with
the Campidoglio to the northwest and the Quirinale, Viminale
Celio and Aventino in an outlying north southwest curve and
the Esquilino.
