Google inc., the market leader in web services has been granted a lisense to operate in China according to well placed but unofficial sources. This will put the world's two largest operators, Google and Yahoo head to head in the world's second largest internet market.


The current figure for internet users in China is around 94 million - that's expected to increase to 134 million by the end of this year - only the USA has more. China's huge population and drift towards liberalisation makes it a prime target for all operators in the industry.

Microsoft is one of the major players trying to increase its influence in Asia generally and it too now has a search engine facility with its MSN Network in China.

As for Google, it already has a small holding in Baidu.com, China's largest Search Engine operation - it has more than a third of the market with Google and Yahoo having just over twenty per cent each but nobody at the company was willing to comment on the acquisition so there's only conjecture on what the strategy might be.

It's supposed that its the potential for continued growth that's the incentive - Google has increased its yield six fold for the first quarter of the year and its stock has inflated by 170 percent.
