General
Since the mid-1980s the Van Gogh Museum is active as a centre for scholarly research. The museum wants to contribute to the study of nineteenth-century art by stimulating and presenting in-depth research in general and research about the life and work of Vincent Van Gogh in particular.
The research that the museum initiates and encourages focuses principally on the scholarly presentation and preparation of the museum's collections. Its various research projects contribute to the museum's reputation as an international centre of academic research in the life and work of Vincent van Gogh and his contemporaries. The results are presented in leading publications, including exhibition catalogues and (from 2005 onwards) Van Gogh Studies (formerly Van Gogh Museum Journal), the museum's academic yearbook.
The museum has a specialised library and a well equipped documentation centre both of which are accessible to the public.
