The aim of this Publication Scheme is to explain what information the Ministry of Defence (MOD) makes available to the public. Under S.19 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the Act) public authorities have a duty to specify what Classes of Information they publish, how the information is made available, and whether it is available free of charge or upon payment. In this context, "publish" simply means, "to make publicly available" in whatever format the information exists (for example as an electronic document, printed book, video or leaflet). The Information Commissioner has approved our Scheme. We will publish information in accordance with it, and monitor and review its operation.
Purpose and aims of the Ministry of Defence
Unique among government departments the MOD including the Armed Forces is both
a Department of State and an Operational Headquarters. The purpose of MOD
and the Armed Forces is to defend the United Kingdom and its Overseas
Territories, our people and interests, and to act as a force for good by
strengthening international peace and security. Information included
within the MOD Publication Scheme gives a more detailed insight into the
diverse range of activities of the Department, what it does and how it
is organised.
Scope and structure of the Publication Scheme
In order to represent the way in which the MOD, its Agencies, Trading Funds
and the Armed Forces work together as one entity, we are publishing a Scheme
which encompasses the whole organisation. A list of the Agencies and
Trading Funds which are integral to the MOD and Non-Departmental Public Bodies
(NDPBs) that are affiliated to the department can be found
here.
The Publication Scheme is structured in such a way that users do not need to know which part of the MOD has responsibility for a particular subject or Class of Information. Guidance on how to find information is provided here.
