  HMS Harvey Tall Ship Model
Painted measures: 31"L x 27"T x 7"WClick here to see detailed photos! Built in Baltimore in 1847, HMS Harvey, like the early clippers were built with two masts. Clippers were used for a number of purposes, all of which made the most of their speed (e.g. blockade runners). As the demand for speed and volume increased, the later clippers were built with three masts and with up to four thousand square metres of sail. The HMS Harvey's main cargo was hemp, used to make ropes for the rigging of ships. The hull was designed for reaching high speeds, built with many sails and an uncluttered deck. This was so that a maximum cargo could be stored. When it was discovered that California was a state with tremendous natural wealth, the resulting rush, including the Gold rush, could only be met on sea using the very fastest ships such as the HMS Harvey. This also enabled a less perilous journey than on land. Some fast times were recorded, such as New York to California in eighty-nine days. Some of the cargoes were so valuable, that their armaments were retained to deal with any pirates that may cross their path. Because the Panama Canal was yet to be built, the journey was through the Horn. Thanks largely to clippers such as the HMS Harvey, cities such as San Francisco saw its population treble in less than ten years.
