WASHINGTON, DC - In response to the damage associated with Hurricane Beta, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has provided $93,000 to Honduras for the local purchase and distribution of emergency relief supplies, helicopter fuel and lubricants, and two locally contracted planes to transport supplies.
On October 29, a USAID Regional Advisor traveled to Honduras to join the USAID consultant based in-country.
From October 29 to 31, the outer bands of Hurricane Beta passed over northeastern Honduras, causing severe flooding in the departments of Gracias a Dios, Atlántida, and Colón. According to the Government of Honduras, the flooding displaced more than 11,000 people. International media sources report that the heavy rains also caused severe damage to roads and bridges in the affected departments, isolating more than 50 communities from relief assistance.
The USAID team continues to assess damages, identify priority needs, and coordinate with local disaster officials. USAID will provide additional updates as necessary.
