USAID Increase Assistance to Mexico Flood Victims

WASHINGTON, DC - Due to the damage caused by Hurricane Wilma in Mexico, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is providing an additional $300,000 to the Mexican Red Cross and other implementing partners for the local purchase and distribution of emergency relief supplies. To date, USAID has provided a total of $600,000 for hurricane relief efforts in Mexico.
On October 25, Hurricane Wilma caused severe flooding across Quintana Roo and Yucatan states displacing approximately 300,000 people in Cancun and severely damaging the homes of another 700,000 residents, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). In addition, the hurricane killed 7 people and affected more than 1,000,000 people.
USAID will continue to monitor the situation and provide additional updates as necessary.
