WASHINGTON, DC - In response to the damage associated with Typhoon Damrey, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has provided $50,000 to Catholic Relief Services to provide assistance to typhoon-affected communities in Vietnam.

The U.S. Embassy in Hanoi reported that USAID-funded flood and storm early warning systems, implemented by the Government of Vietnam in collaboration with the U.N. Development Program (UNDP), helped to minimize loss of life in coastal areas. USAID has invested approximately $2.4 million in early warning systems in Vietnam since 2000. For Typhoon Damrey, the Government of Vietnam evacuated 600,000 people away from the coastline, reinforced sea dikes, and recalled 40,000 fishing vessels.

On September 27, Typhoon Damrey reached the coast of Vietnam, resulting in the deaths of 68 people and injuring 22 others in the northern and central regions of the country. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) reports that the typhoon damaged or destroyed more than 100,000 homes, 300,000 hectares of rice and cash crops, and 22,000 shrimp and fish ponds. According to the U.S. Embassy in Hanoi, the Government of Vietnam news agency has reported approximately $209 million in damages.

USAID will continue to monitor the situation and provide additional updates as necessary.
