The Van Gogh Museum is open until 10:00 pm every Friday evening. This extension of the opening hours is made possible by the museum's promoting partner Rabobank and the City of Amsterdam Department of Economic Affairs. In addition to the permanent collection and the temporary exhibitions, the museum offers a supplementary programme on Friday evenings, presenting something new and special in the museum.

As part of this programme, in September the Van Gogh Museum will be launching a monthly music podium. Every second Friday evening of the month, students and recent graduates of the Conservatory of Amsterdam will have the opportunity of showing off their talent and versatility, ranging from classical music, jazz, world music, old music and pop music. The focus is not only on the music itself, but also the story behind it and, naturally, its presentation.

The exhibition Fierce friends: Artists & animals in the Industrial Era, 1750-1900 (5 October 2005 - 5 February 2006) is all about the relationship between man and animal. On Friday evenings this theme will be central in meetings with artists, scientists, and in guided tours, lectures and films. Also during the exhibition, every Friday evening in the Van Gogh Museum you can find a suitable date using the animal signs in Chinese astrology. Pick up a button at the information desk with the animal of your birth year and a description of the animal signs you are most compatible with. Now all you have to do is muster up the courage to go up and talk to your match and, who knows, you just might leave the museum together!

Art Café – Realism Now

Realism and figurative art have returned to the scene. Over the past ten years abstraction has virtually disappeared; most contemporary painters now produce ‘recognisable' subjects, often basing their work on photos; landscapes have become interesting again. But what is realism? The gallery owners at the Realisme 05 fair (19 to 23 January 2005 in the Passengers Terminal Amsterdam), to be held for a second time owing to last year's resounding success, have been doing good business with realistic art for many decades. It accounts for a major share of the art market, yet draws no attention from the press and museums. Various worlds in the field of contemporary, realistic art are brought together in a round table discussion.

Art journalist Sacha Bronwasser (Vrij Nederland) leads the discussion and interviews the following guests: artists Ronald Ophuis and Henk Helmantel, gallery owners Adriaan van der Have (Torch Gallery) and Koen Nieuwendijk (Galerie Lieve Hemel) and Emily Ansenk (director of the Frisia Museum).

Sequenzas

The first performance in a new monthly musical platform, held every second Friday evening of the month, in which students and recent graduates of the Conservatory of Amsterdam have the opportunity of showing off their talent and versatility.

Central in this series are the Sequenzas. These solo pieces by the Italian composer Luciano Berio (1925-2003) are a veritable voyage of discovery into the possibilities of the instrument and the player: unfamiliar sounds and techniques unusual for the time are assimilated into virtuoso and capricious solos. Theatrical elements play an important role in several of these by now modern ‘classics'. At times, the players are required to adopt techniques at odds with the norm. For instance, in the Sequenza for singing, there is screaming, mumbling and whispering. With his Sequenzas, Berio not only set a new standard for composing music for these instruments but also for its performance. To enhance the intimate character of the musical pieces, they are each performed in an individual part of the museum.

The participants in the project are young professional musicians specialising in modern music:
Sequenza I for flute (1958) – Marieke Franssen
Sequenza II for harp (1963)– Miriam Overlach
Sequenza III for voice (1966)– Sabine Wüthrich
Sequenza IV for piano (1966)– Ermis Theodorakis
Sequenza VII for oboe (1969)– Naomi Sato (Arr. for soprano saxophone)
Sequenza VIII and violin (1976)– Bas Wiegers

The musical pieces will be elucidated by composer and teacher of 20th-century music Willem Wander van Nieuwkerk.

Fidan

A monthly series (every second Friday evening of the month) in which students of the Conservatory of Amsterdam are offered a platform.

Born and raised in Germany, the Turkish singer Esra Dalfidan's ambition is to bridge her cultural background and her western living environment by means of a musical synthesis. Her jazz compositions are characterised by a broad spectrum of folkloristic, classical, contemporary, Indian and, naturally, Turkish musical influences.
All of the members of this quintet (whom Esra met while studying at the Department of Jazz of the Amsterdam Conservatory) have their own individual creative input, which Esra has succeeded in forging into a close-knit unity.
Fidan addresses all of the senses and ushers the audience into a world rich in contrasts.

Intelligent Design – Bas Haring

The theory of evolution is once again drawing a great deal of attention. According to the adherents of ‘Intelligent Design', Darwin's theory is not conclusive. Others believe that the story of creation should be deleted from biology books as it is not scientifically founded.

In the exhibition Fierce friends: Artists & animals in the Industrial Era, 1750-1900 (5 October 2005 - 5 February 2006, Van Gogh Museum) the theory of evolution plays an important role, since it radically changed man's understanding of the animal kingdom and thus the image of man himself.

Bas Haring (known for his book Kaas en de evolutietheorie and the philosophical television programme Stof) philosophises on the phenomenon ‘Intelligent Design' and draws Friday evening visitors into his meditations.
