Auto insurance is confusing. It's one of those things that seem intentionally confusing. How else can you explain the questions your insurance company asks you? It's not uncommon for us to receive a letter in the mail from our car insurance company and have no idea what they are talking about. They might as well write it in Swahili. A common question we receive is do you need insurance to drive with a learners permit. So we asked Dale. First and foremost it's important to be honest with insurance company says Dale.
According to Dale you should inform your insurance company the minute there is a new driver in the family. This applies to a teen with a learners permit as well as any other driver. Allstate will not charge you for a driver with a learners permit for the first year. If that young driver gets into an accident you are covered. And according to Dale it happens more than you think. Be sure to contact your insurance company the minute your teen gets behind the wheel to see what their policy is. You would hate to call them after an accident.
Once your new driver gets their full drivers license contact your auto insurance agent and let them know. Be aware that the number of cars you have will affect your insurance costs. If there is a car for each licensed driver including the new teen driver the rates will be more expensive. Being one car short for that first year your teen is driving could save you about $100 a month.
