Ketchikan Fishing Report 8/29/05 to 9/04/05

The marine sport fishery in Ketchikan is continues to be good for a number of species as increased fish abundance (especially coho salmon) continues to have anglers excited. The seventeenth week of dockside surveys continued to encounter a large number of anglers during sampling periods. Anglers on average spent 238 hours to catch a king salmon, 219 hours to catch a chum salmon, 16 hours to catch a pink salmon, 2 hours to catch a coho salmon, 4 hours to catch a halibut, 74 hours to catch a lingcod and 5 hours to catch a rockfish. No other species of fish were noted during the dockside interviews. Anglers interested in marine shoreline fishing should continue to look at Thomas Basin and Mt. Point for areas to catch salmon. Anglers are reminded to check ADF&G;'s main web page for any in-season regulation changes under the Emergency Order icon. The freshwater sport fishery in Ketchikan still continues to be dominated by fishing in Ward Creek and Ward Lake. Fishing has improved at these locations as rains have moved in and increased fish activity. Summer and fall run coho plus pink salmon are appearing in Ward Creek in very good numbers. Ketchikan Creek was opened to sport fishing on August 27 by emergency order. Anglers looking for additional trout fishing opportunities should consider Carlanna, Harriet Hunt, Upper and Lower Silvis and First or Second Waterfall Lakes. Anglers interested in remote trout fishing should consider Eagle, Wilson, McDonald, Reflection, Orchard, Ella, Checates, Manzanita and Humpback Lakes just to name a few. All anglers are reminded to check their regulation booklet prior to fishing in any area as regulations differ considerably between locations.
