Overview
The 89 lawyers in the Washington office frequently handle a wide variety of matters that may simultaneously require legislative, regulatory, and judicial initiatives. Many of our Washington lawyers have government experience directly relevant to the firm's practice.
The following summarizes some of the group's practice and experience. Results depend upon the facts of each case.
The firm represents clients before the U.S. Congress and federal agencies and departments in matters involving health care, taxation, energy, telecommunications, international trade, environmental law, transportation, occupational and product safety laws, antitrust, food and drug law and education.
Lawyers who practice in the public policy area coordinate efforts for our clients on matters that involve a policy component. One lawyer currently practices exclusively in the public policy law area: Christine L. Vaughn, former special assistant to the Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Tax Policy and former director of tax policy for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Other professionals in the section bring additional legislative experience and expertise to our public policy practice.
To achieve our clients' policy objectives, we address all aspects of legislative representation: developing strategic plans tailored to specific legislative goals; consulting with officials in the executive branch and with Congress; drafting and analyzing proposed legislation; writing testimony and preparing witnesses for appearances before Congress and regulators; organizing coalitions; and monitoring, analyzing and reporting on legislative developments of concern to firm clients.
Because of the scope of the firm's practice, our lawyers routinely draw upon the extensive knowledge and experience of lawyers throughout the firm, and work with clients whose offices are outside the cities where we have offices. Our clients include large public companies, financial institutions, municipalities, partnerships, trusts, tax-exempt organizations and various health care service providers.
For examples of the firm's lobbying work, see the descriptions for the Health Care and Tax Practices.
