FOREIGN EXCHANGE MARKET NEWS

November 22, 2005
Treasury and Fixed Income Division

THAI BAHT

THB Ref. rate on Nov 21, 05 is 41.232. Thai Baht slightly rose to 41.18-22 from morning trade around 41.21-24 per dollar on stronger yen to 118.75 from 119.45 level. The market players are focussing on the U.S. president to visit the China this week which expects to talk about the Chinese currency, (expects the yuan to revalue again which may occur at the beginning of next year). The SET was down 4.35 points or 0.64% to 672.06 points with total volume of 8.53 billion baht. Today's rate, Thai Baht was weakened to 41.22-24 per dollar. Support and resistant are seen 41.10 and 41.30 respectively.

OTHER CURRENCIES

The dollar jumped higher against the euro on Monday after European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet said the bank was ready to raise euro zone interest rates but was not necessarily planning a series of rate hikes.
Trichet in testimony on Monday told the European Parliament's Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs, "I don't see at all, ex ante, the start of a series of augmentation of interest rates."
In remarks on Friday, Trichet had given the first clear indication that the ECB was ready to raise euro zone rates for the first time in two and a half years, sparking market speculation that the ECB was at the start of a rate-hiking campaign.
The dollar's rally in 2005 has been driven mainly by a widening U.S. interest rate differential over euro zone rates, but the prospect of tighter ECB monetary policy could start to narrow that gap and boost the euro against the dollar.
Markets have fully priced in a quarter-percentage-point rate rise at the ECB's next meeting on Dec. 1, to 2.25 percent from an historic low of 2.0 percent held since mid-2003.
The euro tumbled to intraday lows of $1.1719 from around $1.1830 shortly before the remark and was down about 0.4 percent from late Friday. Against the yen the dollar traded at 119.04 yen, down about 0.1 percent from late Friday. The dollar rose to a 27-month high around 119.56 yen last week.
