Background

WMO logoThe World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the part of the United Nations responsible for co-ordinating meteorological and related activities, is holding a competition for young artists.

Children around the world are being encouraged to contribute paintings and drawings inspired by one of the following wide-ranging topics.

  • The beauty of weather and clouds
  • The work of meteorologists and hydrologists
  • Meteorological and hydrological instruments
  • The role of weather forecasting in disaster mitigation
  • Environmental issues related to weather, climate and water

Each of the 187 countries that belong to WMO are being asked to choose two or three of their top entries. The best of these pictures will be published in a book entitled 'Weather by children'.

The Met Office, as part of the WMO, is encouraging UK children to take part in the competition.

Taking part

The competition is open to three age groups 4-7 years, 8-10 years and 11-16 years. The winning picture for each age group will be submitted as one of our entries into the WMO competition, with the chance to see your picture in print if selected by the WMO.

Pictures should be based on one of the five topics listed above and can be in the form of either paintings, drawings or computer graphics, so let your imagination and creativity run wild.

The competition is open to UK residents between 4 and 16 years old. The competition is open to individual children but we also encourage teachers to run school or class contests and submit their best entries.

The deadline for entries is 30 November 2005. Entries will be judged by a member of the Met Office and the winning entry from each age group will be selected. Results will be posted here during December 2005.

Prizes

The winning entry from each age group will be submitted as the UK's entry into the WMO competition. WMO will choose a selection of images from all member states to include in the Weather by Children album.

In addition, the winner of the 4-7 and 8-10 age groups will each also win a Met Office Weather Presenting Kit, whilst the 11-15 age group winner will win a Met Office Satellite Poster Set. All winners will also receive a Met Office goody bag.

Winning entries to the competition will appear on the Met Office Education web site and the WMO web site.
