Driving in
Madeira
The easiest way to see Madeira
which is part of Portugal, and the only way to reach some spots,
is by car. Apart from a few new highways which are being constructed
around Funchal, Madeiran roads follow the contours of the
countryside. These roads are old and narrow with frequent hairpin bends
and mountainous inclines and descents. Driven with care and consideration,
Madeira's road system brings accessibility to many areas of the
island where once wheeled transportation was impossible.
Madeira has many newly asphalted
roads and a new dual carriage motorway. We drive on the right hand
side of the road and all cars have the steering column on the left. That
all seems very straightforward... Within the city there exist many narrow
cobbled roads which can be very slippy when wet. Even outside of the city
of Funchal there exist many, many narrow windy roads. Special care
and attention should be taken when touring the island. The locals obviously
know their way around and therefore tend to drive at speed.
Most people are understanding about a tourists apparent indecision whilst
navigating the island and you will find the majority of Madeiran drivers
friendly and courteous. Due to the extreme mountainous terrain on some
roads, it is recommended that correct usage of the gearbox as an aid to
assist braking will help keep the brakes cool even on the most demanding
slopes. Petrol stations are quite abundant - but do fill up before leaving
the city of Funchal. Stay within the legal speed requirements and
remember that drinking and driving is an offence throughout Europe. We
recommend you take your time - wear your seatbelts - take it easy - and
enjoy the beauty of Madeira Portugal.
Licence Requirements
A passport and current EU or international licence is required
when hiring a car on Madeira.
Which Side of the
Road? Madeirans drive on the right and give way to traffic
approaching from the right.
Island
Driving It is recommended that drivers sound their horn, especially
when approaching a bend or when about to overtake (a short toot-toot is
considered polite). Although not a written rule, it is recognised as a courtesy
to slow down for approaching vehicles which have overtaken and for the
overtaken vehicle to slow down and allow the overtaker to pass
safely.
Caution! In urban areas, cars may stop
suddenly without indication or pull over unexpectedly so that the driver can
talk to a friend on the roadside, unload passengers right outside their front
door or pop into a shop.
Parking
Within Funchal there are open car parks along the Avenida
do Mar and a more expensive covered car park beneath the Marina shopping
centre, therefore parking is seldom a problem. Around the island it is
normally permissable to pull off the road providing there is space to
do so. The only place that can get busy is the popular Porto Moniz
on the north coast.
Service
Stations These are located in most of the larger
towns.
Speed
Limits On the newer stretches of road around Funchal, the speed
limit is 80 kph and occasionally 100 kph on short stretches only. Generally,
across the island the speed limit is 60 kph. Many roads, however, are too
twisting for most cars to get out of second gear and so motoring is
slow.
