Driving
in Portugal Giving way and priorities
You drive on the right
side of the road in Portugal Except when otherwise indicated all vehicles
approaching from the right have priority Roundabouts The driver already
on a roundabout normally has the right of way Seat belts Safety-belts
are compulsory in all circumstances. Crash helmets on motorcycles is compulsory.
Drink-driving Drinking
and driving is severely controlled and limited to a restriction of 0.5
g/l - penalties are severe. The police have a zero-tolerance policy.
Speed limits Unless
otherwise indicated urban limit is 50 km/h Rural roads other than those
zones indicated are limited to 90 km/h Motorways are limited to 120 km/h
Speed radar traps are quite common in Portugal, as are spot checks.
Portugal has one of the highest rates of automobile accidents and fatalities
in Europe. Portuguese driving habits, high speeds, and poorly marked roads
pose special hazards. In continental Portugal, fines for traffic
violations are substantial and usually must be paid on the spot. In the
Azores, driving can be treacherous due to narrow cobblestone
streets, blind curves, unprotected embankments, herds of cows in the countryside
roads, and the high speeds of other drivers. In contrast to the continent,
traffic violations are registered by radar and later forwarded to the
offender via the postal service - payments are not made on the spot. Taxis
do not have meters. The fare consists of a base fee plus a posted rate
per kilometer traveled. Public buses are inexpensive. Bus services begin
at 7 a.m. and generally operate until 8 p.m. depending on the destination.
U.S. visitors to Portugal may drive with a valid U.S. driver's license
for up to six months. For international driving permits, please
contact AAA in the U.S. at tel. 1-800-222-4357. For specific information
concerning Portuguese driver's permits, vehicle inspection and
mandatory insurance, please contact the Portuguese National Tourist Office
by telephone at 1-800-767-8842 or via the Internet at http://www.portugal.org.
If you break down If you break
down or get a puncture you should move your vehicle as far out of the
way as possible and then put your hazard triangle 50m. up the road. If
you have to leave the car to find a telephone and the car is off the carriageway
you might put the triangle in the back window to save it from being stolen.
Unlike the UK, stranded women motorists in Portugal generally
do not consider themselves at risk. Most roads have a hard shoulder if
you break down.
Someones personal
experience of driving in Portugal
Portugese drivers are usually in a hurry and although
they don't have as many motorways as Britain, they pretend to. The roads
in portugal are often bumpy with the occasional cave for the shocking
upper-cut to the suspension. Travelling by day you'll have a wonderful
tour of the Portugese way of life, as you drift through villages slower
than walking pace. After a few days of this we vowed only to drive at
night to avoid the awful traffic congestion problem, which invariably
led to us getting completely lost. Signposts worthy of the Krypton Factor
now have me believing, contrary to Roman belief, that actually all roads
lead to LISBOA. Get a good map. Alternatively use the expensive "Peage"
motorways for swifter journeys chomping up the landscape. Fuel costs can
be as much as twenty percent cheaper than Britain!
