Some General tips for driving abroad
Watch out when pulling out from service
stations or restaurants on the left side of the road. And if you spot
a petrol station on the left, remember that theres going to be oncoming
traffic between you and it. TAKE CARE when overtaking allow more
space between you and the car in front so you can see further down the
road ahead. KNOW THE LIMIT every country in Europe now has strict
drink driving laws at least as strict as the UK and more stringent
in some other countries. Drivers should not assume that their personal
limits for the UK will match those of other countries. KEEP TO THE LIMIT
- speed limits are implemented rigorously and radar traps are frequent.
Watch for speed signs and remember to think in KPH not MPH. KEEP COINS
HANDY Pay-as-you-go tolls are charged on most motorways in France,
Spain, Italy, Switzerland and Austria. BELT UP Seat belts front
and rear are obligatory everywhere, with some countries enforcing strict
rules on carrying children. GREEN FOR DANGER Traffic signals can
be confusing and vary internationally. In many countries a continously
flashing amber light means that you may proceed if the road is clear,
but you must give way to both other cars and pedestrians. The change from
green to red can be far quicker than in the UK. DONT DAZZLE
Avoid blinding oncoming drivers at night by fitting Rover Dip Beam Converters
that instantly convert the beam of the headlights from left to right.
Rover 25 Headlamp covers with Dip Beam Converters part number XBV100780
Rover 45 Headlamp covers with Dip Beam Converters part number XBV100810
Rover 75 Headlamp covers with Dip Beam Converters part number XBV100600
MGF Continental Headlamp Converters part number XBV100600 HEAR THIS
Using the horn for giving a warning of presence is also far more common
in mainland Europe than in the UK but local restrictions apply in urban
areas. PLAN AHEAD make sure you know where you are going. Exploring
is enjoyable but a good map and a good idea of where you want to be will
help avoid confusion at difficult moments. Know your road numbers. MAKE
YOURSELF UNDERSTOOD Have a phrase book with simple phrases to hand
and learn key words petrol, breakdown, hospital, bank, for example.
AVOID AN IDENTITY CRISIS Make sure that passports and visas remain
valid for at least the duration of your travel. Remember you may also
need: Additional insurance motor, medical and personal. Your insurance
company may require you to obtain and carry a Green Card for driving abroad.
The vehicles original registration document or a letter of authorisation
of use abroad from the owner. An International Driving Permit DONT
FORGET Throughout mainland Europe, you are also legally obliged
to: Display a nationality plate or sticker on the rear of the vehicle.
Some
brief driving tips for specific countries
ITALY Despite its noisy
and carefree reputation, use of the horn is prohibited in built-up areas
except in immediate or extreme danger; warnings should be
with flashed headlights only. Rear-mounted racks (including bike carriers)
must be tagged with an approved red-and-white warning sign available from
accessory shops throughout Italy. Theres a fine of approximately
100,000 lire waiting for those who havent got one and 25
per cent has to be paid on-the-spot by foreign motorists; double if you
want to argue the point. In a bid to thwart rising car crime levels, Italian
police are stopping foreign-registered cars to check ownership documents
failure to present them can result in the car being impounded.
SPAIN Drivers who wear glasses are required to carry a spare pair
in the glove box in case they lose or break their main ones. If they dont
they can face a roadside fine.
FRANCE Never use sidelights, use dipped beam as a minimum; flashed
headlights means Im coming through or a friendly warning
of a police speed trap!
GERMANY Its an offence to run out of petrol on the motorway;
abusive language and gestures are also offences. Buses have right of way
when leaving bus stops.
AUSTRIA Do not park caravans within 500 metres of a lake to avoid
contravening local environmental laws.
FINLAND All accidents involving elk and deer must be reported to
the police; cars left in poorly lit streets at night must have parking
lights illuminated.
NETHERLANDS Trams and cyclists on cycle paths have right of way.
To use a motorway, cars must display a vignette pass (equivalent
of car tax) in the windscreen, available to purchase from tourist offices
and like Spain, spectaclewearing drivers must carry a spare
pair.
PORTUGAL Park only in the same directions as traffic flow; caravan-towing
vehicles should display special yellow-triangle-on-blue-background
sign and have an up-to-date list of caravan contents to show police if
requested.
