79th Annual Thanksgiving Parade

DOT Introduces City's First Credit Card Friendly Parking Meters
DOT Commissioner Iris Weinshall introduced
the Citys first credit card friendly parking meters.
To increase the convenience of on-street parking, during
a six-month pilot project beginning November 21, 200 muni-meters
in the Theater District from West 43rd Street to West
56th Street between Fifth Avenue and Broadway will accept
credit cards as an additional payment option.
Holiday Traffic Mitigation Plan Effective
Friday, November 18
Transportation Commissioner Iris Weinshall and Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly announced the 2005
Holiday Traffic Mitigation Plan, which is developed each year
to address the unusually heavy vehicle traffic associated
with the holiday season. It includes nine gridlock alert
days, when significant vehicle traffic is anticipated.
Residents, commuters and visitors are strongly advised
to use mass transit on those days. See the calendars for
November and
December. Free MetroCards are being distributed at Shea Stadium to motorists who park at Shea and use mass transit. Other
initiatives will be undertaken by the NYPD, the MTA, the
Port Authority, and NJ Transit.
Sunday Meter Regulations Are No Longer In Effect
In accordance with legislation enacted by the City Council, beginning Sunday, November 13, 2005, parking meters and muni-meters no longer have to be paid on Sundays.
Alternate Side Parking Rules
Alternate side parking regulations will be suspended on
Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 24. Parking meters
also will be suspended. All parking rules will be in effect
on Friday, November 25. See the 2005
calendar for all scheduled holiday suspension dates.
On other dates, alternate side parking regulations are
in effect citywide.
Manhattan and Williamsburg Bridge Construction
Beginning the week of November 28, construction will result
in temporary changes in pedestrian access to the Manhattan
Bridge and Williamsburg
Bridge.
DOT Begins Installing Muni-Meters on 125th Street in Manhattan
DOT has begun replacing the single space meters on West 125th Street between Fifth and St. Nicholas Avenues with muni-meters that accept both coins and NYC Parking Cards. DOT has installed
more than 1,800 muni-meters citywide, while removing an
estimated 9,000 traditional parking meters. These are
the latest locations
where the NYC Parking Card can be used at muni-meters.
Mayor Bloomberg and Commissioner Weinshall
Announce $18 Million Initiative to Improve Atlantic
Avenue Traffic Safety
Mayor Bloomberg and DOT Commissioner Weinshall announced
a series of traffic safety improvements along a 2.2 mile
stretch of Atlantic Avenue, from Pennsylvania Avenue in
Brooklyn to Rockaway Boulevard in Queens.

The
NYC Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Study is a cooperative
effort of NYCDOT, MTA New York City Transit and
the New York State Department of Transportation
to bring BRT to NYC to improve the speed and reliability
of the bus system.
The list of BRT Corridors has now been refined to 15 (+2) Potential BRT Corridors with the highest probability of success and potential benefit.

DOT Requests for Proposals (RFPs) will now be offered on-line.
New Car Seat Law in Effect
A new State law
now requires a child restraint system for all children
under 7. Is your car seat installed correctly? Nine out
of ten are not. Have it checked for
free.
Purchase NYC Parking Cards On-Line
DOT announces that NYC Parking Cards can now be purchased on-line with a credit card, as well as by downloading an application, visiting a CityStore, or calling 311. The card can be used in all municipal parking facilities, all muni-meters, and selected single-space meter locations.
Flight 587 Memorial Project
The City of New York is advancing plans for the creation
of a memorial to honor the memory
of the 265 lives lost in the Flight 587 tragedy on November 12, 2001 in Belle
Harbor, Queens.
DOT Walk to School Project
The Walk to School project aims to improve children’s health, tackle traffic congestion and pollution, and improve safety. The City is working with pilot schools to encourage children to walk to school, and provide them with the skills to do so safely.
Downtown Brooklyn Transportation Blueprint
A planning charette on the Downtown
Brooklyn Transportation Blueprint was held on June
16 at Brooklyn Borough Hall. The project’s technical
memorandum can be downloaded.
Truck Route Changes
The truck route system in Hunts
Point has been updated to improve safety and provide
improved traffic flow into the industrial area. The pilot
program that allows small commercial vehicles and single-unit
trucks to use the Grand
Central Parkway between the Triboro Bridge and the
Brooklyn Queens Expressway will become permanent. Read
