Screening HIV-Infected Persons for Tuberculosis
Cambodia, January 2004--February 2005

In 2003, health officials in Banteay Meanchey Province, Cambodia, began a project to increase tuberculosis (TB) screening among persons with HIV infection. Data from the first 14 months indicated that 37% of HIV-infected persons had been screened for TB disease and 24% of those screened had TB disease diagnosed. Good Laboratory Practices for Waived Testing Sites: Survey Findings from Testing Sites Holding a Certificate of Waiver Under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 and Recommendations for Promoting Quality Testing

The Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA) allowed physician's office and other health-care locations to conduct simple, low-risk tests without routine regulatory oversight. Sites wanting to conduct nonregulated tests were simply required to obtain a CLIA Certificate of Waiver. As a result, so-called "waived testing" has steadily increased in the United States. To evaluate testing done in sites holding a Certificated of Waiver, studies were conducted by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and several CDC-funded partners during 1999--2004. The studies genally found that, although most sites perform testing correctly, some practices could lead to errors and, more importantly, poor patient outcomes. This report summarizes study findings and presents recommendations for conducting quality waived testing.

Abortion Surveillance --- United States, 2002

This report summarizes data voluntarily reported to CDC regarding legal induced abortions obtained in the United States in 2002. In 2002, a total of 854,122 legal induced abortions were reported to CDC by 49 reporting areas, a 0.1% increase from 2001. The highest percentages of reported abortions were for women who were unmarried (82%), white (55%), and aged <25 years (51%). Abortion surveillance in the United States continues to provide the data necessary for examining trends in numbers and characteristics of women who obtain legal induced abortions and to increase understanding of this pregnancy outcome. Policymakers and program planners use these data to improve the health and well-being of women and infants.
