The extension of Aung San Suu Kyi's detention is yet another step in the wrong direction by Burma's military rulers. In order to move the country toward democracy and national reconciliation, the Burmese regime should release Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners, and initiate a meaningful dialogue with the democratic opposition and ethnic minority political groups. more

Travel to Europe
Secretary Rice will travel to Germany, Romania, Ukraine and Belgium Dec. 5-9, 2005. Her visit will highlight the enduring importance of transatlantic relations and our efforts to partner with Europe to address common challenges around the globe.  Prior to Secretary Rice's visit, Deputy Secretary Zoellick will visit Germany Nov. 30-Dec. 1 to meet with Chancellor Merkel, members of her new cabinet, national security officials, and members of the Bundestag.

U.S. Response to Pakistan's Earthquake Disaster
The United States responded immediately and generously to Pakistan's call for assistance following the tragic and devastating earthquake of October 8. At the Reconstruction Conference on Nov. 19, USAID Administrator Andrew Natsios announced an increase in the overall U.S. commitment to Pakistan for relief and reconstruction to a total of $510 million.
