Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs Dina Habib Powell announced today a dynamic new U.S. Department of State partnership with FORTUNE’s Most Powerful Women in a mentoring program for emerging women business leaders from around the world. Selected participants will have the opportunity to be mentored by a senior executive in a Fortune 500 company and to develop management and business skills while gaining experience in the competitive, cutting-edge U.S. business environment. Ann Moore, Chairman and CEO of Time, Inc. (parent of FORTUNE), will be the first business leader to take part in the program.
"The FORTUNE-Department of State International Women Leaders Mentoring Partnership is part of a greater effort to increase private sector engagement in U.S. public diplomacy efforts," said Assistant Secretary of State Powell. "Understanding that people-to-people exchange programs have a proven positive impact and that America’s private sector is a vast repository of creativity, skill and initiative, the Department of State places a high priority on developing new, creative means of magnifying America’s global outreach."
International participants in U.S. Department of State exchange programs gain awareness of civic rights and responsibilities, as well as the skills needed to become effective business, civil society and community leaders. Participants in the International Women Leaders Mentoring Partnership will include early- to mid-career professionals or college graduates in business with an interest in starting a business in their region or in expanding their existing business. Their program will begin with an orientation in Washington, D.C., including meetings with Department of State officials and professors at leading business schools in the area. Following their orientation the participants will begin the month-long mentoring program.
