Afghanistan

The purpose of USAID's agricultural sector development program is to improve food security, increase cropping productivity and rural em-ployment, and improve family in-comes and well being. Improved job opportunities and incomes are also aimed at reducing pressures on the poor to grow illicit crops. Here, a farmer tends his grape vines. Photo: USAID/AfghanistanYears of civil war, compounded by Taliban rule and the worst drought in memory, have devastated Afghanistan. At the time that the Taliban was forced out of power, half of Afghanistan's people lived in absolute poverty and were unemployed. Virtually all of the country's institutions and much of its infrastructure were destroyed. To support the war on terrorism and to keep with America's tradition of assisting those in need, USAID is working to build a safe, stable society that meets the needs of its people and eliminates an environment that breeds terrorism.

Sector Snapshots

On behalf of the American people, USAID is working in several key areas to help rebuild Afghanistan for the Afghan people. You can read about each sector, view videos, and read fact sheets here:

USAID has officially opened the Phase I reconstruction of the 482-kilometer (300-mile) Kabul to Kandahar highway. This key portion of Afghanistan's national road system (also known as the "Ring Road") links its two largest cities and economic centers. Approximately 35 percent of the population lives within 50 kilometers of the Kabul to Kandahar highway.

The Kandahar-Herat Highway connects the southern and western parts of Afghanistan. This 557 km stretch of highway is part of the “Ring Road”, which interlinks the main cities of Kabul, Kandahar, and Herat. USAID is funding 326 km of the Kandahar-Herat Highway.
