Symposia,Field days,Internships

The Collections Department collaborates with the School of the Chicago Botanic Garden to offer classes and symposia for professionals and the gardening public, as well as internships for students interested in pursuing careers or graduate education opportunities in horticulture.

Symposia

Each year, the Garden hosts numerous symposia that draw on the plant collections. Annual symposia include the following:

  • Perennial Plants Symposium, with the Perennial Plant Association
  • Woody Plants for Midwest Landscapes, with the Ornamental Growers Association of Northern Illinois
  • Garden topics, with Horticulture magazine

For details about upcoming symposia, consult the School of the Chicago Botanic Garden.

Collections Field Day

The Collections Department of the Chicago Botanic Garden hosts an annual Collections Field Day, when professionals attend a daylong program on a topic of current interest. Authoritative speakers and tours of the Garden’s collections are featured at these events.

The 14th annual Collections Field Day will be held on August 28, 2003. The program, entitled "Greater Landscapes – for Less," features Tom Vasale, a successful horticultural consultant from Virginia, who will discuss how best to approach a new landscape or rework an existing one. Find out more about the 2003 Collections Field Days program and how to register.

Internships

Internships are coordinated by the Intern Program of the School of the Chicago Botanic Garden. The Collections Department hosts three to four interns per year. Internships range from three to 12 months. Collections interns typically have a background in horticulture, botany or related fields. Interns have the opportunity to learn many techniques, including collections documentation, mapping, researching new plants and other special projects.

If you are interested in an internship, please see the application information on the Intern Program page.
