Why mountains?
Mountains are the source of nearly half of the world?s freshwater resources. They shelter one-fourth of the world?s forests, much of the world?s biodiversity, and a rich diversity of cultures. They are a source of inspiration and are adventure destinations for people around the world.
But mountain populations are marginalised ? politically, economically, culturally, and geographically ? and remain disproportionately poor. Because they are especially fragile but provide tremendous ecological services to the planet, mountain ecosystems require special attention and resources.
