Finding Great Deals on EBay

Finding Great Deals on EBay

EBay tips and tricks to getting the most for your money.

by Lorraine Venner New  *

We all dream of getting an incredible deal. We flock to end of season sales and discount stores. Now we try online stores and auction sites in hopes of getting more value for what we pay.

eBay deals are out there for you to find. But you need to be a savvy buyer to truly get something wonderful that others don't see (or find). Learn from my successes and mistakes from buying on EBay auctions. There are deals out there waiting for you.

  1. Verify the Seller is Honest
Look at the seller ratings for the auction that lights up for you. Make sure you read ratings and comments from people who actually bought from this seller. The comments say what they liked or disliked about this seller. Be wary of sellers with bad ratings and no ratings.
  2. Carefully Read the Auction Description
We all skim ads and let our minds fill in the details. When buying from an auction, this can be a costly mistake. Reread EBay auction descriptions until you are sure of what is being offered and what is NOT being offered. For example:
    • Is the Item New?
If it doesn't say new, it isn't.
    • Is the item real gold or silver?
When selling 14 kt gold, it will say it. Usually gold means gold-tone or gold finish. The same goes for silver. It isn't sterling silver unless it says it.
    • How much is shipping?
I've seen shipping be $13 on a $1 item. Don't let this be you.
    • Will it Get to you Fast?
Sometimes the auction is for something that won't ship for 2 months. Read the details especially if you want it by a specific time.
  3. Is It a Deal for You?

Often an EBay auction will state that the items are "worth $XXX". Many times that price is inflated. For instance, you can find similar items much cheaper than "$XXX" at normal stores. (However, the auction price may still be cheaper than you can by elsewhere - it really helps to know how much you usually pay for items!) If you are only interested in some of the items in an auction, adjust your bid to reflect how much just those items are worth to you unless you plan to sell or use the rest.

  4. Auction Frenzy
Price compare on the net at the same time to avoid overpaying. Know that usually you can buy the item later elsewhere. Wise buyers know to walk away when the price is higher than the item is worth to them.
