Do I need any fishing tackle, bait or gear?

The Alaska fishing guide provides all fishing rods, fishing reels, tackle, boats, bait and any other equipment you can think of on all guided fishing trips. In addition to the professionalism of our guides you can also depend that you will be provided with top quality fishing gear that has been throughly tested in all Alaska fishing conditions. You may want to bring a rod and reel for some of the non guided fishing that is available when you are not fishing with the Alaska fishing guide.

How much does a fishing license cost?

A 7 day non-resident fishing license is only $30 and a 14 day license is only $50. Fishermen who will be fishing during the king salmon season will also need to purchase a king salmon harvest stamp for $10. Anglers under 16 years old are not required to purchase a license but they must have a salmon harvest ticket which is free at all fishing license outlets

What is the weather like?

From May to October, which is the “season” at the Alaska fishing guide fish camp you can expect temperatures in the 50s in the early mornings while you are fishing rising to the 60s-70s in the long 15-22 hour days. Of course it rains, and some years a lot more than others, so one needs to be prepared with appropriate rain gear.

What kind of clothes do i need?

Alaska is truly the last frontier and the dress is very casual. Jeans, flannel shirts, t-shirts, and fabrics like cotton and wool are very popular as are the high tech polys that are available at most outdoors shops. Gore tex type rain gear serves the double purpose of being a good windbreaker as well as good raingear

How big are the fish and what are the limits?

With the Alaska fishing guide you can expect to get king salmon that go from 20 -85 pounds, red salmon that are from 5-15 pounds, silver salmon that weigh from 8-20 pounds and rainbow trout and dolly varden to 12 pounds. You can expect halibut from 20-300 pounds. We suggest that you release halibut over 100 pounds unless you are in the Homer Halibut Fishing Derby and your fish has a weight that will win you some money. A 100 pound halibut will yield about 75 pounds of meat and with a seasonal limit of 5 king salmon and limits on red and silver salmon from 3-6 per day you will soon stock up the freezer.

What kind of boats does the Alaska fishing guide use?

On the Kenai River, the Alaska fishing guide generally uses powerboats that handle 4 fishermen. We use the “Willie Predator” that is 22 feet long and 7 feet wide. This boat is an excellent fishing platform. We also fish from drift boats on the Kenai River on request and exclusively on the Kasilof River. Our ocean fishing vessels, the Sea Otter and the Northern Lights are 30 feet and 40 feet long and handle 6 and 10 fishermen respectively

What do I do with the fish I catch?

The best way to take your fish home is to take it as part of your luggage. Most of the local shops carry airline approved fish boxes that can keep fish frozen for up to 30 hours. the boxes are readily available locally and cost less than $20 each and will hold 70 pounds of frozen fish. The Alaska fishing guide has freezers available at no charge to store your catch while you are at the fish camp. The Alaska fishing guide recommends very strongly that you have your catch vacuumed bagged at one of the local processors. the charge for this service is about $.50 per bag and will extend the shelf life of your catch to over a year and it will be as good as the days you landed them

Where can I eat and buy food?

The Alaska Fishing Guide fish camp is located only 15 minutes away from the towns of Kenai and Soldotna on the Kenai Peninsula.These are fishing resort towns and are well populated with an abundance of grocery stores and restaurants as well as many of the national fast food store. Your private cabin at the fish camp has a fully equipped kitchen where you can prepare meals or grill and eat on the picnic tables outdoors next to the cabins. Contrary to what you may have heard from long ago prices are probably the same as in any other area of the country.
