Winter is a good opportunity to study the basic structure of trees and shrubs, and to appreciate colorful bark and fruit. Take a walk around the Great Basin and be immersed in the impressive display of crabapples, loaded with red – and sometimes yellow – fruits. Walking past the Heritage Garden towards the Rose Garden, you can find color in the fruits of Washington hawthorn, Sargent crabapple and beautyberry, with its brilliant lilac berries. The red twigs of redosier dogwood and yellow branches on willows are more prominent now, and falling snow brings a special beauty to the gardens. Don't hibernate – enjoy a winter stroll through the Chicago Botanic Garden..
