Sun, since its inception, has supported open standards as the only fair way to evolve technology. With the rise of such Free & Open Source development projects as Linux, Perl and Apache, a tremendous support for the development and promotion of open standards has emerged. Sun is committed to cooperation with any entity that successfully promotes the cause of open standards, and so in 1999 Sun began to consciously engage with various existing Free & Open Source projects.
In 2000, working with CollabNet, Sun launched the NetBeans and OpenOffice.org communities and announced its support of the GNOME Foundation. Since that time there have been many more developments between Sun and the various Free & Open Source communities, and Sun has emerged as a leader among the traditional technology companies in the area of learning to work cooperatively with individuals and groups devoted to this new way to develop technology.
Discussion and communication is an important best practice in thriving Free & Open Source communities, and we hope SunSource.net will quickly become a focal point for general discussions between and about Sun and Free & Open Source. So, look to SunSource.net to keep you informed about where and how Sun is contributing to the Free & Open Source movement.
