- About Venice
- The traditional heartland of the city are the six sestieri of Dorsoduro, San Marco, San Polo, Cannaregio, Castello and Santa Croce, built on 117 small islands in the lagoon there are some 150 canals serving as the city´s transport system - indeed Venice is Europe´s largest car free zone. With such an immense amount of canal, there are unsuprisingly many, many bridges, 409 to be precise of which only 3 cross the Grand Canal.
- The Cannaregio district is the northernmost and derives its name from the Cannaregio Canal, which was the main access point for visitors until the coming of the rail link. This area was traditionally the working class area, although there are also a few palaces - most of which face on to the Grand Canal. It was also the site of the Jewish Ghetto, as well as being the site of the wonderful chapel of Santa Maria dei Miracoli, home to a wonder working statue of the Virgin and Child.
- San Polo is the smallest of the sestieri, just 86 acres along the Grand Canal - it is however one of the city´s oldest areas, settled over a millenium ago. This area includes the oldest bridge in Venice, the Rialto as well as Venice´s oldest church, according to tradition, San Giacomo di Rialto.
- Home to the 19th century Accademia, Venice´s art school, Dorsoduro derives its name from the Italian for "spine" as it enjoys relatively stable land. This sestieri is home to many religious houses as well as beautiful palazzos.
- Santa Croce has two very distinct halves, the east is largely medieval and includes the magnificent San Giacomo dell´Orio, to the west is a modern port, built on land which was only created in the 20th century.
- The small sestieri of San Marco is the location for many of the city´s most treasured delights; Saint Mark´s Square, the Basilica of Saint Mark - in which the Apostle´s relics have been housed since the 9th Century - the Doge´s Palace and a clutch of beautiful churches.
- Castello is the largest of the sestieri and dates from the 13th century when the area grew around a naval dockyard. Originally divided between monasteries in the north and the Arsenale, at one time Europe´s largest naval complex, Castello now houses the Biennale Gardens, an alteration set in place by Napoleon. In common with the other sestieri, there are an abundance of churches, palaces and of course bridges over the canals to see.
