1930's Runabout Model Boat measures: 16"LClick photo to enlarge detail! What the snappy sports roadster is to the automobile world, the inboard runabout is to power-boating. The speed, dash, and color that make the roadster popular ashore contribute likewise to the attractiveness of its maritime counterpart. Names like Chris Craft, Lyman, Riva, Garwood, Hacker, and Century were commonplace on the lakes and rivers from the 1930's - 1950's.Classy and practical, there is more to the runabout than zip and speed. With these essentials go the complementary virtues of staunchness, dependability, and comfort. Because of the very nature of the duties imposed upon them, runabouts have to be a combination of sound design, ruggedly built hull, and fast, reliable engine. Standard inboard runabouts, better known to the layman as speedboats, range in length from 16 to 33 feet in length. Typically they could travel at 25 to 60 mph, depending on size load, and engine. They are clean lined, appealing boats of varnished Mahogany and chrome plated fittings and trim. Glass shields protect the occupants from wind and spray. Soft leather upholstered cushions make the ride comfortable. This type of boat is designed for easy riding and sharp, safe turning. They just get up on the water and go. They are as simple to handle and operate as an automobile. Surely the boat-builders art holds no finer examples than these smart, handy, serviceable water "roadsters".
