Beyond the Savage River Check Station at Mile 15 of the park road, you’ll need to be on a bus, bicycle, or your own two feet. Shuttle buses travel to various destinations along the Denali Park Road, going as far as Kantishna at the road's western end.
Construction on the park road began in 1922, and it was completed to Kantishna in 1938. In 1972, construction of the George Parks Highway between Anchorage and Fairbanks made it possible for more visitors to drive to the park. The National Park Service established the shuttle bus system that same year, anticipating a dramatic increase in visitation with subsequent adverse impacts on wildlife.
The park transportation concessioner, Doyon/ARAMARK Joint Venture, offers several types of bus services within the park. We encourage you to explore different options to best meet your needs.
Bus services include shuttles within the entrance area, the Visitor Transportation System shuttles, and interpretive bus tours.
