Technical Support : Filtering

Internet content filtering is a service that GCI users can select as an additional feature for $4.99/month. Content filtering routes all requests for any web page through a proxy server, which runs filtering software backed by frequently updated site database.

A variety of techniques are used to manage the site database. A sophisticated research process is used to continuously comb the Internet, identifying thousands of suspect sites every day. In addition, customer page review requests are sent in from users nationwide asking that a site be blocked or unblocked. A review team carefully analyzes and catalogs each site and responds to customer requests individually.

GCI does not recommend nor oppose content filtering. We believe that the choice to filter or not filter belongs to each user. Please keep in mind that filtering Internet content is no substitute for active supervision of web activities.

Filtering Criteria
Specific criteria are identified in several areas, and web pages are measured against them. Exception areas are also defined within those criteria.

Technical Setup
If you desire to use content filtering, you must first call or e-mail GCI Internet to have your account set up for filtering. After that is enabled, you will need to change your computer's browser configuration.
