NOAA image showing flash flood warnings issued after dam fails in Missouri. NOAA NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE ISSUES WARNINGS AS DAM FAILS IN MISSOURI
Flood and flash flood warnings were issued along the Black River in Missouri by the NOAA National Weather Service office in St. Louis, Mo., following the failure of the Upper Tom Sauk Lake Dam near Lesterville, Mo. The dam is in the Ozark foothills about 120 miles southwest of St. Louis. “Everyone along the Black River and tributaries downstream of the Tom Sauk Lake Dam is encouraged to pay heed to future warnings and statements from the NOAA National Weather Service to keep themselves safe from potential flood waters,” said Noreen Schwein, water program meteorologist at National Weather Service Central Region headquarters in Kansas City, Mo. Forecasters said water would rise rapidly to as much as 20 feet deep along the Black River, well above flood stage.

NOAA ORGANIZES RESCUE TEAM TO DISENTANGLE NORTH ATLANTIC RIGHT WHALE — The NOAA Fisheries Service is leading a team of federal, state and non-profit biologists and scientists to rescue an entangled North Atlantic right whale off the southeast coast of the United States. Severe weather and ocean conditions are keeping the team temporarily in port, however, the group is currently tracking the whale. The species is the most critically endangered in the Atlantic with only about 300 in existence.

NOAA image of Altair unmanned aircraft system, or UAS. NOAA, NASA, GENERAL ATOMICS AERONAUTICAL SYSTEMS INC. USE UNMANNED AIRCRAFT FOR ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH AND DISASTER PROTECTION — NOAA successfully completed its first series of missions using a high-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aircraft system to support NOAA's operational and research needs. Over the course of one flight, the Altair UAS set a number of records, including the longest duration it has flown, the farthest distance from take off to return to the same base, and the farthest total distance. cartoon picture of a video camera The Emmy award-winning NOAA documentary, Saving Springer, is a remarkable and inspirational story about the work that NOAA does every day. Springer, a young abandoned killer whale, might have faced a solitary existence, left to make her way as best she could. Instead, the work and dedication of NOAA professionals gave Springer a new chance at life and helped her return to her family.
