Decade after decade South Africa has produced some of the world's finest golfers. Four-time Open Champion Bobby Locke has been followed in the most amazing style by nine-time Major Winner and Grand Slam titleist Gary Player, with double US Open and Open Champion Ernie Els being kept company by fellow countryman and two-time US Open Winner Retief Goosen extending the continuity of this wonderfully successful golfing lineage. With Tim Clark winning the highly prestigious Scottish Open at Loch Lomond in July could this possibly be the birth of a modern-day South African Great Triumvirate...?! All the family at Egoli Golf send their heartfelt congratulations and celebrations to South Africa's Greatest Sportsman, Gary Player, on his 70th birthday. Age is just a number to the ultra-fit golfing legend and we wish him many more! In only his second tournament appearance since sustaining the still troublesome knee injury which kept him out of top-flight golf for five months, Ernie Els shot a sublime 14-under 284 to win the Dunhill Championship at Leopard Creek. This co-sanctioned event between the European and Sunshine Tours is now played annually at Anton Rupert's stunning Kruger Park hideaway and is yet another powerful advert for golf in South Africa. With five of the first six places taken up by local talent, the Dunhill once again proved itself to be the perfect showcase for South African golfing talent! For the latest news, views, information and statistics on all the major tours around the world click on http://www.egoligolf.com/links/golf_links.htm gain knowledge, and impress your buddies! These great champions are being chased by a highly impressive and hungry pack of Young Guns who are already making their mark on the US, European and other Tours around the globe. Rory Sabbatini, Trevor Immelman, Darren Fichardt, Richard Sterne and Charl Schwartzel are proven winners who will soon be joined by more exciting talent as the fallout from the explosive Super Nova that is South African golf, keeps gaining energy and creates yet more stars!

An impressive list of overseas players used the Sunshine Tour and its superb courses to launch their careers and become stars on the international scene. Great golfers like Nick Faldo, David Feherty, John Daly, Corey Pavin, Tom Lehman, Tommy Tolles and many others competed with high quality local stars Dale Hayes, Cobie Legrange, Hugh Baaiocchi, John Bland, Bobby Lincoln, David Frost, Tienie Britz, Fulton Allem, Jeff Hawkes, Gavin Levenson and the Henning brothers, to name but a few!
Zimbabweans Tony Johnstone, Mark McNulty, Nick Price and Simon Hobday also enjoyed great success on this tour.

The reasons South Africa has - and indeed still is - producing so many fine players, are simple:

  • The Climate: The weather on the Highveld is exceptional and golf can be played quite literally 365 days a year.

  • The Cost: Golf is affordable and accessible to most people.

  • The Golf Courses: Are championship quality, extremely well designed, fully irrigated, perfectly manicured and maintained and are a great test to all levels of player.

  • Practice Areas: Almost all clubs have excellent facilities which include a full driving range with large practice chipping and putting greens. South African PGA professionals have a profound knowledge of the game and are on hand at all times to give advice and sort out the quirkiest of swings with a laidback approach that will make even the most nervous of pupils feel more than comfortable!

  • The Clubhouses: Are palatial and can host anything from a simple four-ball party to fields of up to 160. Luxurious, state of the art bars, restaurants, conference and banquetting facilities are serviced by highly skilled, friendly staff who wish to see their guests enjoy themselves and reserve future bookings!
