PACIFIC ISLANDS RADIO
ARTISTS' PROFILES

Melanesia     Micronesia   Polynesia

Tahiti is a special place and its vibrant music is unique, exciting and unforgettable.

This CD is a collection of some favourite recordings from the top producers in Tahiti. It features vocals by the most famous Tahitian singers, accompanied by great Polynesian musicians.

It is amazing that this tiny group of islands has such a rich musical cultural heritage. These musicians have blended their melodies combining a French and American influence with the rhythms of the native chants of Tahiti.

This CD is the next best thing to getting on a plane and arriving at this wonderful place they call Tahiti. So, wrap a pareu around you, sip your favourite tall, cool drink, turn on Pacific Islands Radio Stations 33K and 28K and sit back, relax and enjoy the authentic sounds of Tahiti.

This record consists of field recordings made for the film "Troubled Paradise" by Academy Award winning independent filmmaker Steven Okazaki. The music features the drums and chants of traditional hula, a classical art varying very little resemblance to the tourist form most visitors are familiar with, and the wonderfully distinct "slack key" guitar sound that is unique to these islands.

The artists include the Halau 'O Kekuhi, considered by many to be the foremost hula group in Hawaii, guitarists George Kahumoku, Jr. and Dean Kaahanuk, as well as Diana Aki who was named best female vocalist in Hawai'i in 1988.

The film "Troubled Paradise" is both a celebration of the richness of Hawaiian culture and a compelling look at the social and political problems facing its indigenous population. Both the film and the music are highly recommended.
