The Maestro Series this month starts off with the late-Romanticism of Richard Strauss, including two of his tone poems — Ein Heldenleben and Don Juan — and the Der Rosenkavalier Suite, and ends with a program that ranges from the 18th-century elegance and wit of Haydn to a World Premiere-New York Philharmonic Commission by Wolfgang Rihm: a perfect showcase for Mr. Maazel's mastery of the musical literature.
