The United States welcomes today's UN Security Council briefing by the UN Secretariat on the deteriorating situation in Burma. The Security Council’s direct involvement on the issue of Burma is another reminder of just how serious the situation in that country has become.
Guatemala recently completed its program to clear landmines and unexploded ordnance from its territory, thanks in part to United States assistance that was channeled through the Organization of American States.
Assistant Secretary Daniel Fried (Dec. 14): "There exists, I contend, a developing transatlantic consensus that our interests cannot be separated from our values ... and that the purpose of the U.S.-European relationship is not to be a venue for value-free competition but to support common action to support freedom."
The U.S. Department of State was one of only two agencies to receive two Presidential Award for Management Excellence awards. The Department's "PMA Human Capital" and "Employee Profile Plus" initiatives were honored.
