Caution on using the Oilcareer.com website fro oil-rig-employment

I have had several emails on this oil-rig-employment outfit. This website and company is somewhat of a sham, and I know because I put them to the test as have several of my colleagues. These were people with a superb 20 years plus offshore oil and maritime backgrounds with past top jobs, history and background and they didn’t even get a response for any oil-rig-employment. These sites make a whole lot of very false oil-rig-employment promises or lead you to believe it’s easy, they take your money and then they email shot or spam a whole bunch of companies with your CV/resume, who in general are unrelated to your discipline or target work area and then they simply never talk to you again after having done that. It is much better to go and register on the other various oil-rig-employment websites, and go to a oil-rig-employment real agency who supplies people according to specific job vacancies. I have a couple of friends who are HR managers in the industry and they told me they don’t even open or look at the emails from this company, so you have been warned!

OIL RIG and SHIPPING EMPLOYMENT REALITY CHECK

It is not as easy as some oil-rig-employment sites would have you believe to simply just walk onto an offshore installation into a new job. Offshore installations are dangerous places, safety is what we all live and breathe, and it is not a training ground for someone who doesn’t have basic qualifications. In general people with a relevant trade in mechanical or electrical or electronics discipline can sometimes get a start, however experienced hands is what most companies chase. Also before you work offshore in floating offshore installations you will have to have a current offshore Medical Certificate (the requirements vary between countries here), a current Offshore Survival Certificate and probably a Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (HUET) Certificate without which you don’t get offshore. Some companies may invest this in you and many will not. These days ships must by law be manned with qualified and competent mariners, that is what STCW is all about. If the maritime employment website can’t show real vacancies chances are they aren’t filling them. If a website offers you a job finding prospect without offering a specific vacancy especially in the Cruise liner market or selling you a guide to employment then be very wary as you will probably lose the money PLEASE DO NOT EMAIL ME WITH CV/RESUME, EMAIL THE COMPANY OFFERING THE JOBS!

Thunderhorse Oil Rig - BP Thunderhorse Update

Having been the Commissioning Manager for BP Thunderhorse I am trying to keep up to date on events and why this happened.

Thunderhorse Oil Rig - BP Thunderhorse Update - July 17th

The vessel is now near completely trim, with all water except for some residual pumped out of the vessel.

Thunderhorse continues to rise and is stable. The platform decking is now 46 feet out of the water and the hull has reached normal displacement. The angle of list to 5 degrees and moves towards normal trim.

WELL DONE EVERYONE! All the doom and gloom people are wrong again!

At Midnight Friday 15th

The Thunderhorse Oil Rig is still afloat and teams are on board and pumping water. The water intakes for ballast and other seawater systems are being sealed (and this is a possible fault area being investigated) and the Thunderhorse Rig remains stable.

I have heard many rumours that a boat backed into the hull and breached it causing the flooding and that a winch fell and did the same. None of these are substantiated and an ROV survey found nothing. Also it has been stated quite correctly that there is no causal effect between Hurricane Dennis and the incident.

The BP Thunder Oil Rig is still listing at 20-30 degrees to port and efforts continue. Hurricane Emily looks like passing well away although peripheral effects are still possible
