"Our version of events is all true, with real people and real happenings... All we've done is fiddle about a bit with time and space..." So says Mr. Vogel near the end of Lloyd Jones's debut novel - actually several tales within a tale - about a man trying to unravel his past by remodeling and embellishing it.
The story concerns the discovery of "the Vogel Papers", an unfinished account of a man's life, and the search for the truth behind his story. On the way there is many a digression, diversion and sidebar about Welsh culture, philosophy, the treatment of disability, facts, theories, fantasies.
Occasionally it can sometimes be hard to figure out where you are in the narrative. The last third of the book works best, focusing on a man who is starting to understand his mental state, shedding the "grandiose alter ego" and epic adventures in order to reconnect with the real world.
One of the most extraordinary and ambitious works of fiction to have emerged from - and about - Wales in recent years - moving, innovative and brilliantly encyclopaedic.
