Milestones in Humanitarian Demining: 2005 On January 1, 2005, the U.S. became the first major military power to put into effect a permanent, self-imposed ban on the use of non-detectable landmines. Also in 2005, demining efforts in two countries were completed, and the U.S. investment in landmine clearance, mine risk education, mine survivors assistance, and research and development on improving humanitarian demining, surpassed $1 billion. Terrorist Designation of Sajid Badat Media Note (Dec. 19): "The Department of State announced on December 16 the designation of Sajid Badat as a foreign terrorist whose activity threatens U.S. citizens as well as the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States.
