END OF SEASON TROUT
COMPETITIONS PROVIDED LIVELIER SPORT FOR ANGLERS ON SOME OF OUR
MIDLAND LAKE FISHERIES
Last
week marked the end of our game angling season. We will return
next February/March as the 2006 game angling season commences.
We hope you enjoyed our reports and that they kept you suitably
informed. We will feature an angling roundup for the season
later on in the year and will let you know when it's published.
Meanwhile any fisheries news updates will be posted here, so do
watch this space from time to time to see what's new. End of
season competitions on Owel, Ennell and Sheelin did provide some
sport in what was otherwise a quiet end to the game angling
season. This was mainly due to very windy weather over the final
days of the season. TIGHT
LINES IN 2006!
SPECIAL NOTICE FOR ANGLERS!
Anglers, please note that the 2005 salmon fishing
season is now over. Salmon licences SHOULD NOT
be purchased online for 2006 until further notice (2006 licences
will hopefully be
available in early December we'll keep you posted). Meanwhile please be reminded that to be compliant with the salmon tagging
scheme, anglers should return their logbook and all unused tags for
2005 in the SAE provided with your licence and mail to us, even when no fish have been caught. Thank you |

NEW
SALMON AND SEA TROUT BAG LIMIT FROM SEPTEMBER 1st, 2005
Anglers please note that there will not be a one salmon or sea trout (over
40cms) per day limit on anglers in September. This has been confirmed by the DoCMNR. The end of season restriction in Bye-Law
No: 797 of 2004 related to the period 1 September 2004 to 31 December 2004
only.
Anglers can catch up to three salmon or sea trout (over 40cms) per day,
subject to a maximum of 20 until the end of the respective seasons.
WHAT
IS GYRODACTYLUS SALARIS (Gs)?
This is an Invisible (parasite) to the naked eye,0.5
millimetre in length, only one needed to breed, when one Gs is born it
is already producing the next two generations (one becomes 6 million
within 4 weeks).
It attaches itself to fish skin by tiny claws. A
young salmon can host 10,000 before it dies.
Very difficult to identify from other Gyrodactylus
species, none of which are fatal to salmon (computer programs now
available to assist identification-principally by the shape of the
claws).
Gs can travel on its own and can survive for six
days off a fish.
Gs cannot tolerate full concentrate sea water but
survives happily in brackish water. It will attach to other salmonid
and non-salmonid species but at certain levels of infestation these
other fish develop immunity, as do Baltic salmon. However, Gs is
thought to be lethal to almost all genetic strains of Atlantic
salmon as evidenced by affected rivers in Norway and Russia (and as
tested on Scottish fish).
Experience from Norwegian rivers is that Gs leads
rapidly to the almost total extinction of Atlantic salmon.

RECREATIONAL
ANGLING IRELAND 2005: Why not give fishing a try?
A series of one day angling sessions led by experts will be held
throughout Ireland during the summer of 2005. Each session will run
from 11am to 4pm. Each session will begin with a talk on safety, the
environment, and good waterside manners. It will concentrate on
instruction in specific types of angling appropriate for each
particular location - sea, coarse, game.
After lunch (which can be purchased at most locations or bring your
own) there will be an opportunity to get hands on experience with
rods, tackle etc. and weather permitting demonstrations / fishing on
suitable waters.
There is no charge for instruction and numbers are limited on a
first come / first served basis. Booking form is available at the
back of this brochure. For info on venues in the ShRFB region

ANGLERS ASSISTANCE REQUIRED IN OTTER AND MINK
SURVEY CONDUCTED BY THE WILDLIFE ECOLOGY GROUP TRINITY COLLEGE
DUBLIN: The wildlife ecology group
of Trinity College Dublin are using dead otters and mink to study
the dynamics of Irish otter and mink populations. If you see an
otter or mink note its location and/or pick up the body and keep it
cool (preferably in deep freeze). They will then arrange to collect
it from you and are extremely grateful for all help. Contact

LOUGH ENNELL
Again
Ennell held on to its trout despite the best efforts
of seasoned anglers trying everything from Minkies to
Mayflies. A lot of quality fish were seen pitching and
most anglers reported moving fish, a familiar feature
on Ennell lately, but failed to connect with them. The
trout season has ended on Ennell now and will re-open
on 1st March 2006 when it will all start again,
hopefully with plenty of quality fish.

LOUGH OWEL
The season ended on a fairly quite
note on Owel, though the end of season competition
did produce 19 fish for 32 anglers, and anglers are
already looking forward to the 2006 season.

END OF SEASON
COMPETITION ....
On Wednesday last 12th
October anglers ventured out on Lough
Ennell & Owel, and competed in the end of
season fly-fishing competition. Fishing
was from 10am-6pm with weigh-in Caffreys
Bar & lounge Mount St, at 7pm. A total of
sixty two anglers competed on the day with
some good fish coming off both lakes. Once
again it was Ennell that produced the
quality trout, and Lough Owel produced the
numbers. The top anglers from Owel were
1st Martin Poynton with a trout weighing
1.63lbs, 2nd Chris Mc Keown 1.49lbs, 3rd
Ken McCarty 1. 47lbs,4th Martin McQuaid,
5th Andy Boyle, 6th Eugene Fagan, 7th Andy
Duncan. The top rod from Lough Ennell was
Mick Dunne with a super trout weighing
3.134lbs, followed by Dave McBride from
Dublin with another good trout 1.812lbs,
and 3rd was John Tyrrell with a fish
1.290. Weigh-Masters on the night were
Andy Boyle & John Tyrrell, and they
thanked all anglers for supporting the end
of season competition, plus Jack Doolin &
Chris McKeown for taking entries on Owel.
They thanked Niall Caffrey & staff for the
use of his premises & much appreciated "Sambos".
SALMON ANGLERS VOICE CONCERN....
Salmon anglers from all
over Ireland and further a field voiced
their concerns on their chosen sport
recently at the Fianna Fail Ard Fheis in
Killarney. Naturally there was a large
turn out from the Shannon Region.
Addressing the large turn out of salmon
anglers "Stop drift Nets now" chairman
Niall Grenn stressed that at no other time
has the salmon stock here in Ireland being
at such a critical point, and as far as
salmon fishing is concerned some rivers
here in Ireland are as good as dead.
Angling tourism has being badly hit by the
low numbers of recorded rod caught salmon,
putting an end to salmon drift netting
will allow salmon return to rivers and
spawn. Other countries which put an end to
drift netting have seen a huge increase in
salmon numbers returning to their natural
spawning rivers.
