Deputy Spokesman Adam Ereli (Dec. 23): "The Government of Iran is engaged in the systematic oppression of its citizens, including the persecution of individuals for religious, political and other reasons. Assistant Secretary Kristen Silverberg (Dec. 20): "The U.S. is pushing very hard; the Secretary is fully resolved to push ethics and budget reforms at the UN. We think it's enormously important."

The conviction in absentia Dec. 22 of opposition leader Sam Rainsy on defamation charges by a Phnom Penh court is further evidence of the unfortunate trend toward deteriorating democratic principles in Cambodia.


    Secretary Rice recently chaired a meeting of the Commission for Assistance to a Free Cuba, stating that the U.S. government must be fully prepared, if asked, to assist a genuine Cuban transition government committed to democracy.

Radio interviews of State Department officials were conducted in the run-up to the Iraqi elections.  The radio interviews covered a wide range of issues and topics.
