ARCTIC WEATHER
CONDITIONS HAMPERED COARSE ANGLING LAST WEEK
The weather was relatively dry recently with
bitterly cold arctic winds and local snowfalls. This has all
changed at time of writing with milder conditions accompanied by
heavy rain which is expected to rise water levels once again.
We have just received a report of a 400lb catch of coarse fish
on the River Inny recently. We are checking out the
details which were apparently published in the Angling Times
- more on this story later ......

SPECIMEN TUB GURNARD FOR CO
TIPPERARY ANGLER
Report from Luke Aston operating the Clare Dragoon, Sea Angling
Charter out of Carrigaholt. " Wind and rain last week put the

slow down as the days get shorter. However when I do get out clear
of the land the fishing has been very good. I think that the best
fishing here can be had during the winter, but it is hard to get the
weather to oblige As for the fishing over the last few trips, as I
said it is very good if I can get off the land and we have been
getting a good mixture of fish. The Pollock are still the largest
part of the catch with some nice patches of codling and whiting. We
have also had some Saith, Ling, Haddock, Cuckoo Wrasse, Garfish,
Ray, Dogfish and Spur Dog. Also we had a Specimen Tub Gurnard of

giving prizes.
This was the first time a programme of this scale was run

CENTRAL & REGIONAL FISHERIES BOARD OFFICERS
AND INSPECTORS RECEIVE AWARDS
by Michael Flanagan, Angling correspondent
At the recent Central and Regional Fisheries Boards
conference and long service awards ceremony in the Slieve Russell Hotel, Co.
Cavan, Fishery officers and inspectors from all across Ireland were presented
with special 25 years service awards. The day long conference dealt with
issues relating to all the different elements of the fisheries board, which
include Research & Development work carried out by the Board, protection work
and the promotion of angling here in Ireland. The Central and Regional
fisheries Board employs over 450 staff nationwide, and some of the Shannon
Regional Fisheries Boards officers and inspectors received awards in the Slieve
Russell Hotel. On the night Minister of State for the Department of
Agriculture and Food, Mr Brendan Smith T.D. presented the awards. Out of the
105 fishery officers honoured was local Inspector with the Shannon Fisheries
Board Mr. Matt Nolan and fellow officers Peter Ruane and Joe Cheevers. Not
alone was Matt one of the recipient of the 25 years service awards but he was
also MC on the night. Minister Smith had a few words to say on the night and
was delighted to present the Long service awards to the Central and regional
Fisheries Boards. He was also delighted to see the awards taking place in his
home county where the coarse fishing is regarded as the best in the world, and
stated that the Government is fully behind the Central and Regional Boards. "I
quote" We, in Government look to the Fisheries Boards as the professionals in
this area to advise us on how this sector should be managed and on the changes
and developments necessary at national and local level to ensure that the
resource is properly managed, developed and protected.
