Bine asked to resign
Oak Island manager wants six months severance pay
Mayor Johnie Vereen confirmed that he received Oak Island town manager Peter Bine’s resignation Friday, but in an e-mail to the mayor and council obtained by The State Port Pilot, Bine said Vereen asked him to resign and that his replacement was already chosen.

Elections will need $1 million
New state, federal ballot requirement costly for county
Voting machines needed to comply with new federal and state mandates will cost Brunswick County taxpayers more than $1 million, elections director Greg Bellamy told county commissioners Monday.
County may go after builders for upgrades
With District 3 county commissioner May Moore leading the way, the Brunswick County Planning Board believes it has found a way to force developers to pay for road improvements to handle the additional traffic load caused by their developments.

State orders new vote
The state board of elections has called for a new election for the North Brunswick Sanitary District. For the candidates involved and Brunswick County Board of Elections officials, the decision did not come as a surprise.

Lady Cougars persevere, enjoy resurgence
The South Brunswick girls basketball team hit a bump in the road against West Brunswick last Wednesday, but their 45-30 loss to the Trojans could take no luster from their recent resurgence. South defeated West Columbus, 54-23, last Tuesday and emerged with a 63-21 victory over Heide Trask in its Waccamaw Conference opener on Friday.

"C" is for Cookie
Sugar and spice and everything nice. That’s what cookies are made of. But local cookie creators recently proved that a cookie is by no means just a cookie, especially when it comes to The State Port Pilot’s annual cookie contest, held last Wednesday. Recipes ranging from the extravagant and gourmet to the kid-friendly and simple flooded into the office, making a selection of 11 finalists quite a task and the naming of a winner exceedingly difficult.
